MARION, Ohio - A Marion City Police officer is in critical condition at Grant Medical Center after being struck by a car while riding his motorcycle. Officer Cory Winfield was driving a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle south on Prospect Street when he was struck near the intersection of Superior Street by a 1985 Pontiac Firebird driven by Joshua Abrams, 20, of Girard Avenue, at 1:12 a.m. Sunday. Winfield had just finished his shift at 1 a.m. as patrol officer with the Marion City Police Department. Winfield was transported to Marion General Hospital by Marion City EMS and was later flown by medical helicopter to Grant Medical Center in Columbus where he was listed in critical condition as of 9 p.m. Sunday. The police department received numerous 9-1-1 calls about the hit-skip accident, advising Abrams fled the scene northbound on Pearl Street. Officers were led to the area of 597 Pearl Street by James Stevenson, who followed Abrams from the accident scene. Officers arrested Abrams and transported him to Multi-County Correctional Center.Formal charges of aggravated vehicular assault, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, underage consumption and leaving the scene of an injury accident are to be forward to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office Monday.
