LOS ANGELES --
An LAPD sergeant today pulled a man out of a burning vehicle that crashed and burst into flames on the southbound Harbor (110) Freeway as he tried to evade arrest, authorities said.
Police noticed around 2:40 a.m. that the driver of a four-door car was traveling at least 80 miles per hour on Vernon Avenue, said Sgt. Jeff Tepich of the Los Angeles Police Department's Newton Station.
As a patrol car was catching up to the speeding cart, the driver entered the southbound 110 Freeway and accelerated to at least 100 miles per hour, he said.
The officers did not attempt to pull the driver but tried to keep up with the car, Tepich said.
The speeding driver then swept from one side of the freeway to the other, lost control and crashed into the center divider, he said.
The vehicle immediately caught fire, trapping the driver, who was wearing a seat belt and whose door was crushed, Tepich said.
Sgt. Chris Gomez ran out of the patrol car and tried to rescue the driver but couldn't get him out through the driver door, Tepich said.
Gomez then went around the car and broke the passenger side window, reached in, and got the man out of the burning vehicle as the blaze was intensifying, he said, adding that no one was seriously injured.
The victim was conscious, able to talk and showed no obvious signs of intoxication, Tepich said. He said the vehicle was not stolen.
The No. 1 and carpool lanes of the southbound 110 were closed at 3:01 a.m., and it was not immediately known when they would reopen, according to the California Highway Patrol.
