State trooper arrests pair with allegedly stolen gun

By Mary Jo Hill TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

LEOMINSTER— A member of the Latin Kings and another man were arrested early yesterday morning during a traffic stop after a state trooper found a gun stolen from Lunenburg in 2003 in their car, according to District Court records.

Christopher R. Quintana, 20, of 131 Chittick Road, No. 2, in Hyde Park, was charged with larceny of a firearm; possession of a firearm without a firearms identification card; carrying a firearm without a license, second offense; and a firearm violation with two prior violent and/or drug crimes, records said.

Cash bail was set at $5,000 because of Mr. Quintana’s record of convictions, among other things, records said. He is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 6.

Luis A. Rijo, 20, of 48 Franklin Hill Ave., Dorchester, was charged with larceny of a firearm; two counts of possession of a firearm without a firearms identification card; and traffic violations, records said.

Cash bail was set at $2,500 for Mr. Rijo, who also is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 6, records said.

Trooper Scott M. O’Malley provided the following information on the arrests of the two men:

At 1:10 a.m. yesterday, Trooper O’Malley saw a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero not staying within the lane on Route 12 in Leominster and on a ramp leading to Route 2 eastbound.

He pulled over the car near the state police barracks in Leominster, and Mr. Quintana, the passenger, said he and Mr. Rijo, who was driving, had left the home of a friend of Mr. Rijo.

The trooper noticed that Mr. Quintana was wearing an earring with a five-pointed crown and wearing black and gold beads, the colors of the Latin Kings. Mr. Quintana said he was a member of the gang.

A check of Mr. Quintana’s record found it was extensive, including an open firearms case and convictions for firearms and narcotics offenses. He is on probation.

Mr. Rijo didn’t have a record.

A police dog was brought in to search the car and a Ruger .357-caliber revolver was found pushed up into a seat cushion under the car’s front seat. A sock holding five .38-caliber bullets also was found.

A check revealed that the gun was reported stolen on July 24, 2003, to the Lunenburg Fire Department.

Nice job!!!

Good job, but does this quote strike anyone as weird? Does the Lunenburg FD investigate stolen firearms?

Nah, no big deal. I usually just report stolen firearms at the DPW. Saves me a trip to the PD when I am busy.

Coach-

You go to the DPW??? I usually head right down to the Board of Selectman's office and if they're not there I leave the gun right on their big table with a yellow post it note saying "I found this. See real crime does happen in this small town. Now show me the money!"
