ABOUT NASHUA POLICE DEPARTMENT
The Nashua Police Department invites you to investigate a challenging and rewarding career in the law enforcement profession with one of the finest law enforcement agencies in the Country.

The Nashua Police Department offers career opportunities within a Nationally Accredited Law Enforcement Agency serving a city of 90,000 residents. Nashua is one of New England’s most progressive, fastest growing cities offering law enforcement career opportunities surpassed by few.

The City of Nashua, New Hampshire’s second largest city provides a unique law enforcement experience – the excitement and variety of police work characteristic of a moderately sized city, yet also the opportunity to personally interact with the community’s residents. Police Officer duties include general or special duty police work in the maintenance of law and order, in the protection of life and property, and in the prevention and suppression of crime.

Nashua is located in the heart of New England and was selected by MONEY MAGAZINE in 1987 and 1997 as the best place to live in the United States.

is this a fund raiser or are they really hiring. I do not mean 3 officers but any real numbers.

Posted by: redsox03

No fundraiser, they are very picky though. They had 15 openings as of June and got about half of that from the last test in June. I would think maybe 10 give or take, Im not sure though.

picky as in? what are they looking for?

NPD, without any doubt, is the elite department in New Hampshire. If you want to work for a squared away department, apply here. They investigate all of their own crimes including homicides. They train their officers frequently and are very open to sending you to specialty schools etc. They have their own SRT unit. They have their own Bomb Squad. Many patrol officers carry AR15 assault rifles. Good size dept with app 180 officers from Chief on down. As with any dept there are nitwits, but 98% of their officers are very squared away. Many apply here, but they only take the best of the best. They would rather remain understaffed than to hire a mediocre candidate. NPD should be the model on hiring solid police officer candidates. As far as negatives, the salary is OK but not comparible to many Mass depts. They get details but there is also flag waivers (who take a bunch of work away). Drug unit very proactive and deep undercover. I could go on and on, but I will shut up now......... Good luck. Great dept!

I see Dragnet has provided "just the facts" in a pretty accurate summary. I would add that many of the things he mentioned are true for several NH departments, many that are hiring. Like Nashua, many departments now are members of regional swat teams, conduct major crime investigations (although the A.G. handles all homicides and officer-involved shootings in state and brings in SP investigators) Many carry AR15's or other rifles, as part of normal cruiser package, have the very latest radio communication equipment, use 21st century cruiser technology (Car 54 voice-activated cruisers) Are heavy into training etc. On the salary side remember if you live in NH there is an automatic 5% or better salary saver with no income tax (although no guarantee this will last much longer), housing is cheaper in many areas and there are rural and suburban neighborhoods within easy driving distance of every city. Flagmen do work but usually when no cops are available (towns have to bring in county deputies or neighboring towns on a daily basis to cover in many areas). Since some communities have a shortage of personnel there is plenty of overtime. New Hampshire is picky about hiring. New Hampshire Standards and Training sets high physical standards for academy admission and most departments require written and oral exams, psychological exams, polygraph and backgrounds. Even with all of this testing there are some nitwits that slip through the cracks and I've actually seen departments fire officers when they show up. Departments at all levels tend to work more closely together than in Mass, probably since all law enforcement officers...from local to state to county and even liquor inspectors and game wardens are graduated from the same academy in Concord. Nashua is a busy city. So too is Manchester. Several towns are also worth looking at for those who want to see action. Salem, Derry, Londonderry are hotspots that come to mind. Hampton, with the beach is very busy nearly all year now. Here many people get their first taste of law enforcement as Hampton hires part timers. Exam for that position is usually given early in the fall and you should consult their website NOW if you have an interest in working there next summer. Hampton never hires a fulltime officer from outside their part time officer pool and even their chief started there. So too did the Capt. of Troop C Mass State Police, former head of SPAM, State troopers in several states, federal agents in all bureaus, local officers of rank across the country, head of the Lowell Police Training facility, etc etc. While the pay is not much there the experience is not beat anywhere else I can think of.

One squared away Dept. In the past I have worked with NPD on 2 cases that crossed state lines. Those guys can't do enough for you. Anyone looking for a great Dept. Nashua is the place.

Excellent information guys, already signed up and ready to roll. Do you think I would be at a disadvantage if my college major was finance? I have never had a run in with the law, have few friends (those who are are good people), never drank nor used drugs and am as hungry as they come.

Get a police job with a finance 4 year degree and maybe in a few years you can transfer to a federal job "following the money," or a very large department where you can do the same.

How are they about tattoo's?

Posted by: AdamJ1984

Excellent, I am psyched.

Posted by: Inspector

Some departments will not hire you if those tattoos are visible while wearing the summer short sleeve uniform.

They are looking for the best of the best.

Posted by: JLT770

so in other words, run EVERY day...i need to stop getting called into work, its screwing up my entire workout plan

Posted by: AdamJ1984

I am in the same situation, but I think that always help by staying in shape. I think they are looking for bright people with a clean past who are justwell rounded citizens. Off topic a little here, if you had to take either the Manchester PD or Windham PD on the same day, which would you choose? Windham is hiring only 2 and I am unsure about Manchester but I am sure they are hiring more than 2. I also think Manchester will have a higher turn out, just a question though.

Posted by: JLT770

well i guess i should think about taking the test. as for windham, never heard of them, rather work for Manchester anyways

Posted by: AdamJ1984

Windham, North of Salem and South of Derry. Pretty nice town, small department, I think the Chief is leaving to go back to CT. But yes, Manchester has more action, more advancement, etc.

Correct. He resigned to take the Chiefs job at Connecticut College.

Posted by: Dragnet

They don't care about your degree. They care that you are squared away. Don't worry about the degree. A degree does not make you a good Cop, trust me!

Manchester VS Windham? It depends what you want. Manchester is a shithole and there is plenty of REAL police work to do there. Manchester is a legit medium size city department of app. 240 guys. They are very busy. I don't know much about Windham, but wouldn't think they are that busy. So it really depends what you want.......

Cool, thanks Dragnet for the reassurance. I should state I am pursuing a finance degree with a year left, but still hold over the 60 credits needed for most departments. And thank God about the degree part, because when it comes down to the truth, there is nothing else I would rather do than work the streets and protect the public. Hope my clean past helps out as well!
