Published: 08/11/2007 Inmates not allowed out of cells at jail By Jim Patten Staff Writer
MIDDLETON - Middleton Jail is in lockdown, with inmates confined to their cells around the clock, a Sheriff's Department spokesman said. "We have been in lockdown since Monday," Paul Fleming confirmed yesterday. Fleming said Sheriff Frank Cousins and Superintendent Michael Marks decided to lock down after security investigations unit officers began to hear about possible misbehavior, Fleming said. "There has been talk among some inmates looking to cause trouble, and the superintendent and sheriff decided now was a good time to lock the facility down and shake it down," Fleming said. The lockdown will continue through the weekend, and the facility will be open for visitors Monday morning, Fleming said. While in lockdown, inmates' cells are being searched for weapons and other contraband, and inmate movement is kept to a minimum. No visitors are allowed. If an inmate has to leave his cell, he is shackled and belly chained, Fleming said. A lockdown also limits inmates' access to rehabilitation programs and the amount of time they are out of their cells to meet with counselors, Fleming said. "This is kind of a summer cleaning," Fleming said.

They do this nearly every July or August. Nothing too exciting going on I imagine.

They should have done this back when all those guys got hurt during that inmate uprising.

No shut the door after the horses are out!

Crazy,
That physical plant issue in that particular unit has been an issue for a long time, and it was never addressed. There was a much smaller incident several years back in which the same flaw in security was used, but it wasn't addressed. I understand that it has been fixed since the publicized incident however. =)

There hasn't been a jail wide shakedown in more than a year. This was overdue. It absolutely should heve been locked down after the "uprising".

Honor,
From your post I assume you may still work there. Do they still do this every summer?

The facility, or most of it anyway, was let out of lockdown today. It seems to be a successful shakedown and for now the place is quiet. I love the Monday morning quarterbacks, especially those who don't even work there anymore. Come back Shane, come back.
Oh, by the way, if a certain someone had reported what he knew before the incident, this would be a non-issue.

Funny how after that incident several sheriff supporters where put on admin leave only to change there stories in order to blame the president of the union. Nice job Sparky. It only took you idiots what three or four weeks to come up with a way to screw someone who just so happens to be the only one involved not donating to the Sheriff's campaign fund. Oh by the way your "credibility" posting was about as pathetic as it gets. Now hurry up and make a copy of these post and take them upstairs like a little rat. "HACK"

Everytime I get into it with you Crazy I get censored so I will stick to the facts. The recent lockdown was a good one. No one got hurt, there was some contraband found and when the inmates were let out, it remained as quiet as it gets up there. People who take jobs in corrections know that there is always the possibility of danger in the jail. Everyone needs to take steps to stop violence whenever possible, and that includes the union president.
PS, the "certain someone" I was talking about in my post from yesterday was not the union president

The bottom line is 6 guys get hurt in an uprising and no lockdown or any public statements from the Sheriff. But a so called routine lockdown and shakedown gets a press release. You get censored because you don't defend the people who are on the front lines. You defend a politician with no law enforcement background and a failed and wasteful system of county corrections that needs to be cleaned up. There is a big movement in this state to merge all those jobs into civil service. That means no more donations for promotions. I have fought for better working conditions for front line CO's. Better pay, Safer working conditions. I have been to several pickets involving other unions across the Northeast in solidarity of my fellow CO. I am currently working with a National orginization that fights for all of these things and more. You on the other hand do nothing but enable people like your Sheriff by donating your hard earned money to a political Hack who has no idea what it's like to do the job. Infact I'm willing to bet his only experience with a set of handcuffs was having them put on him.

The bottom line here is you guys do not like the sheriff because he is black. He has done nothing but make the department better than it was under the past administration and put money in our pockets. Problem is, he wants you to do your job too. Imagine that, get paid for working. Fact is, you are working for all of those other groups you talk about, but you don't work for us anymore. Let it go. Another fact is, I did stand up for the correctional officers. I said they are a hard working, great staff. I also said that most of them knew someone to get the job, you included. The unit involved in the disturbance was locked in when the incident took place. The rest of the jail was locked in later based on information gathered after people finally figured out that they needed to share that information with people that could help. If you think for one minute that anyone wants staff to get hurt because of your union game playing you are wrong. It makes me sick that some of you want to go down that road. The Essex County Sheriff's Department is a good place to work for anyone who wishes to have a career in corrections. I don't want to get in a pissing contest with you Irish, but the stats confirm that; pay, benefits, group 4 retirement, etc. Everyone works for someone Irish and most people don't like it.

So now your going to play the race card? Thats your response? what a scumbag you realy are. What the hell does race have to do with anything? He's an elected official. If he and you can't take the critisism them move to China, Russia, Iran, or any other Country you can think of where free speech is not protected. I can't believe you and others like you would stoop so low and acuse anyone who disagrees with your "High" sheriff of being racist. Once again you have proven to be so pathetic it's not even funny. Your comments are desperate and idiotic. I love how you give credit to your Sheriff for the amount of money people make there. If you like I will post a photo taken some years ago in Newburyport. It's a photo of 85 Co's protesting for better pay and bennefits. We spent a better part of the winter that year picketing and fighting for the wage you and others recieve. Your "high" sheriff had nothing to do with it. He only gave in after he got his balls kicked in and it was the union that got that money not him. Just like an administrator to give credit for every bennefit you have to your "high" Sheriff.
Because he's Black! what a freaking idiot you are!

the Essex Sheriff is black ? funny , that has never come up in conversation with Essex officers and i see them almost weekly.
i believe they want the same things as most guys , decent money , better working conditions and less politics.
at one time it was hoped all correction officers could be in the same union. sadly MCOFU dropped the ball and never fulfilled that vision.
maybe sometime in the future we'll all be on the same page and the rampant politics associated with the counties will be gone.
this is no slight to you sparky. i understand the system over there , but don't agree with it.

It could be worse. You could be working for Bristol county.
