Students lined up against wall, shot in head execution-style

(wcbstv.com)
Four young people, including three active students at Delaware State University, were shot in the head at close range in a school parking lot, killing all but one, authorities said Sunday. The victims, all from the Newark area, were shot overnight after they were lined up against a back wall near a set of bleachers at the K-8 Mount Vernon School

NEWARK, N.J. --
Three friends were forced to kneel against a wall behind an elementary school and were shot to death at close range, and a fourth was found about 30 feet away with gunshot and knife wounds to her head, police said.
All were from Newark and planned to attend Delaware State University this fall.
Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow said authorities didn't have any suspects or a motive in the killings late Saturday. None of the victims had any criminal record, she said.
"They were good kids," Dow said.
The four had been listening to music in a parking lot behind Mount Vernon School when they were gradually joined by a group of men, authorities said.
Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy said the four exchanged text messages saying they should leave, but were attacked before they could do so.
Police said the attackers shot one young woman, then forced her three companions down an alley, lined them up against a wall, made them kneel and shot each in the head.
Natasha Aerial, 19, was listed in fair condition at Newark's University Hospital, authorities said. Police identified her companions as her brother, Terrance Aerial, 18, Ofemi Hightower, 20, and Deshawn Harvey, 20.
The Aerials' mother, Renee Tucker, said the last time she saw them was around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, when they told her they were going around the corner to get something to eat.
"They said they were going to come right back to the house," Tucker said.

NEWARK, N.J. - Three friends were forced to kneel against a wall behind an elementary school and were shot to death at close range, and a fourth was found about 30 feet away with gunshot and knife wounds to her head, police said.

"They said they were going to come right back to the house," Tucker said.
Hightower was a motivated student who had recently enrolled at Delaware State, according to his great-uncle John McClain.
"She was one of the most beautiful ladies you'd ever want to meet," McClain said. "Very smart, very intelligent. She wanted to be something in life."
In the wake of the killings, Mayor Cory A. Booker's administration was again hearing from residents angry about the city's homicide rate.
A month ago, Booker and Police Director Garry McCarthy announced that crime in the city had fallen by 20 percent in the first six months of 2007 compared to a year ago. Yet despite decreases in the number of rapes, aggravated assaults and robberies, the killings have continued.
"He doesn't deserve another day, another second, while our children are at stake," said Donna Jackson, president of Take Back Our Streets, a community-based organization. "Anyone who has children in the city is in panic mode."
Booker's office didn't return a call for comment on Monday.
Saturday night's killings, along with an unrelated shooting over the weekend that killed a Montclair man, brought Newark's 2007 homicide toll to 60. That is three fewer than in the same period in 2006. But there have been 17 slaying in the eight weeks since June 12.
At Delaware State, officials said the school plans to hold a memorial service Aug. 28, after the student body returns for the fall semester.
"While the murder of the two students is a terribly loss in human terms, the facts that they were a part of the DSU family and were striving to earn a degree, create a bright future for themselves and become a solid contributors to society, makes this violent act especially tragic and senseless," university President Allen Sessoms said.

I agree... it's awful that 3 people died, but there has to be more than they "were just good kids getting an education..." You don't just end up against a wall with a bullet in your head without having done something to piss someone else off...

Teen arrested in N.J. schoolyard deaths

By JEFFREY GOLD, Associated Press Writer 4 minutes ago

NEWARK, N.J. - Police arrested a 15-year-old boy in the killings of three college students in a schoolyard, shootings considered jarring even in a city used to violence, a law enforcement official said Thursday.
The teen was arrested Wednesday night, said Paul Loriquet, a spokesman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
Four friends, ages 18 to 20, were shot while hanging out in a school yard Saturday night. Authorities have said robbery appeared to be the motive.
Three of the victims — Terrance Aeriel, 18, Dashon Harvey, 20; and Iofemi Hightower, 20 — were forced to kneel against a wall and were shot at close range. The fourth, 19-year-old Natasha Aeriel, Terrance Aeriel's sister, survived a wound to her head and is hospitalized.
Despite being under sedation for periods, Natasha Aeriel has been providing authorities with information about the shootings, Mayor Cory A. Booker said.
The killings brought unwanted publicity to the city, which has struggled for years with violent crime. Residents and law enforcement organizations have donated $150,000 to aid the victims' families and to a reward fund.
"This is a defining moment for our city. The crime is not going to define Newark but our response to it," Booker said Thursday on ABC's "Good Morning America."
All four victims were planning to attend Delaware State University this fall. Instead, three were to be buried Saturday in separate services.
(This version corrects that the arrest made late Wednesday, not Thursday, according to the latest information from authorities.)

Second Suspect In Deaths Of 3 College Students Surrenders

NEWARK, N.J. -- A 31-year-old man being sought by police in the execution-style killings of three college students surrendered Thursday to police, law enforcement authorities said.

The surrender of Jose Carranza, who Newark Mayor Cory Booker said police were looking for Thursday morning, came less than a day after police arrested a 15-year-old boy in the killings of three college students in a schoolyard, shootings considered jarring even in a city used to violence.

Investigators said more arrests could follow.
"We believe that others were involved in this heinous crime," Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow said. "We're looking for them."

Booker said Corranza has three prior arrests and one trial upcoming, Booker said.

"Much of information was gathered by ballistic evidence at scene, including a fingerprint off the bottle," Booker said.

The spokesman said the teen was arrested last night.

The shootings targeted a group of four friends between the ages of 18 and 20 who had been gathered in a schoolyard in Newark Saturday night. Authorities have said robbery appeared to be the motive.

Terrance Aeriel, 18, Dashon Harvey, 20; and Iofemi Hightower, 20, were forced to kneel against a wall and were shot at close range. The fourth, 19-year-old Natasha Aeriel, Terrance Aeriel's sister, survived a wound to her head and is hospitalized.

Booker said Natasha Aeriel had assisted with the investigation.

Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy said there was no indication of a gang angle to the crime.

Residents and law enforcement officials have donated $150,000 for the victims' families and for a reward fund.

Booker told ABC that the crime itself is not going to be allowed to define Newark -- but rather the city's response to it would define the city.

Suspect Pleads Not Guilty in New Jersey Students' Execution-Style Deaths

Friday, August 10, 2007

NEWARK, N.J. — A Peruvian national in the U.S. illegally and who was previously charged with raping a 5-year-old pleaded not guilty Friday in the execution-style slayings of three young college students a day after surrendering to Mayor Cory Booker.
Jose Carranza, 28, who also goes by the alias Jose La Chira, entered his plea before Essex County Superior Court Judge Michael Casale. A second suspect, a 15-year-old boy, has been held pending a detention hearing. Authorities were seeking to have him tried as an adult
Carranza, of Peru, was being held on $1 million bail. He turned himself in to Booker after his fingerprints were lifted from a bottle in connection with the shootings of four college students on Saturday. Three were killed but a fourth survived and was hospitalized after the shootings in a Newark schoolyard.
FOX News has learned Carranza, who has a fake Social Security number, had been arrested on charges of raping a 5-year-old and then threatening the child and parents. In that case he faced a 31-count indictment.
In another, he was arrested on assault charges stemming from a bar fight.
Immigration officials apparently were aware of Carranza's illegal status since his prior arrests, according to Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura.
Relatives of the victims embraced each other as they entered to watch the hearing.
Carranza's attorney, Felix Montalvo, called Booker on Thursday to arrange his surrender.
“He said, ‘Mr. Mayor, we’d like him to be turned in directly to you,’” Booker said Montalvo, who also is a close friend, told him.
On Wednesday night, police arrested the 15-year-old boy who along with Carranza is accused of murder, attempted murder, robbery, weapons offenses and conspiracy to commit the crime of robbery, Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow said.
Dow said she doesn't believe there is any familial relationship between the two in custody.
The teen, who is Hispanic, is an American citizen with a Newark address, Booker said.
“I don’t think words can describe the level of emotion I feel,” he said of the crimes.
“We will confirm that there are others we are looking for," he said, adding, "I am confident all the suspects in this investigation will be apprehended."
Carranza's attorney, Montalvo, led him by the hand during his surrender.
“He simply came forward," Booker said. "He said nothing. We put him in handcuffs."
The sole survivor of Saturday night's shootings, 19-year-old Natasha Aeriel, provided information from her hospital bed after being shot in the head.
Aeriel was with her brother, Terrance Aeriel, 18; Dashon Harvey, 20; and Iofemi Hightower, 20, who were forced to kneel against a wall and were shot execution-style outside a Newark school.
The students had been planning to attend Delaware State University.

Jose Carranza, aka Jose La Chira

NEWARK, N.J. — The investigation into the execution-style murder of three college students took a shocking turn Friday afternoon with a report that two of the victims may have been sexually assaulted before they were killed.
FOX 5 New York reported that a sexual attack may have occurred before college students Terrance Aeriel, Iofemi Hightower and Dashon Harvey were shot to death, and 19-year old Natasha Aerial was critically wounded.
Authorities charged a third suspect with three counts of felony murder in the killings Friday evening, according to an Associated Press report. The suspect was described as a 15-year-old boy by Essex County prosecutors during a late press conference.
The latest developments capped a day of high drama in Essex County Superior Court, where Peruvian national Jose Carranza, an illegal immigrant previously charged with raping a 5-year-old, pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder and one charge each of attempted murder and robbery.
Speaking through a Spanish interpreter, Carranza, 28, who surrendered Thursday to Mayor Cory A. Booker, said he understood the charges against him.
A second suspect, a 15-year-old boy, pleaded not guilty Thursday and remains in custody, Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Thomas McTigue said Friday. Authorities are seeking to have the boy tried as an adult.
