Be a straight guy and tell a gay joke and you're fired for sexual harassment and creating a hostile working environment. Be straight and force a group of gay firefighters to attend a "straight pride parade" and you'd be sued for their violating civil rights.

But be a straight firefighter and express your desire not to attend a gay pride parade, and you're "disobeying a direct order."

Imagine the shitstorm had they forced female firefighters to attend a parade where they were acosted by men who made obscene sexual comments, exposed their genitals, and requested sexual favors. Ridiculous...
