POMONA, Calif. California Highway Patrol officers arrested a local man Tuesday morning after a short chase that ended on Fairplex Drive near Ganesha High School.
Julio Mathis, 29, of Pomona was booked into Los Angeles County Jail on suspicion of felony evading officers, resisting arrest and driving without a license, said Sgt. Dean Trujillo of the Baldwin Park office of the California Highway Patrol.
The incident began at 9:12 a.m. after an officer spotted a black Honda traveling at more than 100 mph on the eastbound 10 Freeway near Dudley Street, Trujillo said.
The officer was using Lidar, an advanced piece of radar equipment, from the shoulder of the freeway that registered the car's speed, Trujillo said.
The driver then noticed the officer and slowed down before exiting at Dudley, Trujillo said. Instead of stopping, the vehicle made a U-turn and got back on the freeway triggering the chase.
With lights and sirens on, the officer then chased the car, which got off the freeway at White Avenue.
The vehicle went through several Pomona streets at speeds between 65 and 70 mph before heading south on Fairplex south of Murchison Avenue.
There, the car went out of control and flipped onto its roof. It slid over the curb before stopping on a grassy area in front of a development across from Ganesha High, Trujillo said.
The driver got out of the car and ran toward the southern parking lot of the high school where officers caught him, Trujillo said.
Mathis was taken by ambulance to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries and released, Trujillo said. From the hospital, officers took Mathis to jail.
Pomona Unified School District spokesman Tim McGillivray said Tuesday no classes were being held at Ganesha High. School will begin Aug. 29, he said.
