UNION CITY, Calif. — A Union City police officer was listed in fair condition Tuesday at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley after his patrol car was struck by a truck on Mission Boulevard.
The officer, described only as a 26-year veteran of the force, suffered several injuries and might have a broken hip, Lt. Thomas Haselton said.
Police closed all lanes of Mission from Decoto Road to Seventh Street for 41/2hours Tuesday while an investigation was conducted. The investigation is ongoing, Haselton said.
The driver of the truck, a Ford F-250, has not been charged in connection with the crash.
At 10:09 a.m. Tuesday, the officer, driving a marked patrol car, was attempting to make a left turn from Holly Leaf Lane onto a northbound lane of Mission Boulevard, police said. He had entered the intersection when the truck, heading southbound on Mission, struck the patrol car.
The impact of the crash caused the patrol car to collide with a third car stopped at a left-turn traffic signal on Mission, police said. Union City firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extract the officer from the damaged car.
The occupants of the two other vehicles involved in the crash were unhurt, police said.
Because the accident involves a Union City police car, the investigation is being conducted by the Tri-City Investigation Team, Haselton said.
