SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Russell Angus just wanted relief from the pain in his groin.
So the 62-year-old St. Paul man asked doctors to remove his testicles. They refused.
He then hired "professionals" to do the surgery for him.
Now, police are looking for the two to three individuals who removed Angus' testicles at his home July 28. Police say the surgery is potentially illegal; anyone who performs medical procedures in Minnesota must be licensed to practice.
"Based on my knowledge and experience, I know that it is not common or usual for a licensed medical practitioner to perform surgery in the nonsterile environment of a private home," Sgt. Richard Munoz wrote in an affidavit.
Police responded to Angus' home July 28 to assist medics on a report of an injured male.
When officers arrived, they saw that an upper-level room had been converted into a makeshift operating room complete with an operating table, medical equipment and a camera.
Angus told police that he had hired two to three people to remove his testicles in his home and that he was not conscious during the surgery.
He said that when he woke up, his testicles and the "professionals" were gone and he was bleeding profusely from his groin. He called his daughter, Jessica Zemek, 26,who came over and called for help.
Police found blood in the living room, the hallway and bathroom. Angus was taken to Regions Hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged.
Officers also interviewed Angus' wife, Anna Angus, who said her husband has limited mobility and has a bedroom on the lower level of the house. She also said he spends "a great deal accessing the Internet via a computer that is housed in his bedroom," Munoz wrote in his affidavit.
She did not provide information about who may have removed her husband's testicles. Angus refused to tell police their identities because he didn't want to get them into trouble.
Police obtained a search warrant and evidence from the home, including three specimen jars, medical supplies and equipment, plastic and cloth sheets a DVD and a computer CPU.

Testicle Surgery Mystifies Police







ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - When conventional medical professionals refused to remove a 62-year-old local man's testicles, police said he turned to mysterious "professionals" to relieve what he called chronic pain.
Now police want to find the fly-by-night surgeons.
"I have never in my life seen anything quite like that," said St. Paul police spokesman Tom Walsh.
According to a search warrant affidavit filed Monday, the man complained of chronic pain and turned to conventional medical personnel to remove his testicles.
When they refused, the 62-year-old man said he hired other "professionals" to do the surgery. He would not tell officers who they were, saying he didn't want to get them into trouble.
Police said a couple of weeks ago, two or three people operated on the man in his home. He was unconscious. When he woke up, his testicles were gone. So were his "professionals."
His groin area was bleeding heavily, so he called his daughter. She called for help. Police found an improvised operating room in the man's house, with bright lights, an apparent operating table, a camera and various medical supplies and equipment. There was also blood in several rooms of the house.
