ORLANDO, Fla. --
Police are searching for a handcuffed man who escaped from authorities on Tuesday morning.
It happened near Orlando International Airport at Heintzleman Boulevard and Cargo Road, WESH 2 News reported.
Officials said it all began during a street race involving two motorcycles, and when they pulled over one of the motorcycles, the driver was taken into custody.
The man, who is in his early 20s, began struggling with the officer, according to authorities, and was able to escape into a nearby wooded area.
A search was conducted but later called off. Police said they were able to talk to the man on his cell phone, but he refused to surrender.
The entire incident happened on airport property, but investigators said airport security was not a concern.
"We have the proper resources to deal with the airport and this. This occurred on a roadway adjacent to the airport, so we'll deal with it, and it will be dealt with effectively," Orlando Police Department Lt. Mike Favorit said.
Police said the suspect's family did come out, but they did not cooperate with authorities. The officer involved in the struggle was taken to a hospital with a knee injury.
