ST. TAMMANY, La. A St. Tammany Parish sheriff's deputy shot a Madisonville man on Saturday afternoon after he called police threatening to commit suicide and then attacked several deputies with a claw hammer when they arrived on scene.
Michael Lachney was in stable condition on Sunday night at Lakeview Regional Medical Center, according to his mother, Verla Mae Lachney.
Michael Lachney, 41, called police from the home of a friend of his mother's on Carmel Road between Mandeville and Abita Springs and said he intended to harm himself or his family.
Sheriff's deputies did not know his exact location and formed a perimeter around the area where they thought he might be waiting. As deputies approached the driveway of the house on Carmel Road, Lachney ran to his car, pulled a claw hammer from the trunk and brandished it "in a threatening manner," according to George Bonnett, a Sheriff's Office spokesman.
Bonnett said deputies first tried to disarm Lachney by talking to him. They also tried to subdue him with a Taser.
"They were trying to stop him," Verla Mae Lachney said. "They did not want him to hurt himself, and they wanted to talk to him. I guess they were going to put him in handcuffs and take him to the hospital."
But Lachney scuffled with deputies after he was hit with the Taser and struck them several times with the hammer, according to the Sheriff's Office. Bonnett said a deputy shot Lachney after he raised the hammer to strike another deputy "in a potentially fatal manner."
Bonnett said the suspect remained belligerent after he was shot and had to be forced to the ground. Lachney's mother said deputies kicked him after he was subdued.
"After they had him down on the ground, they had no business kicking him," Verla Mae Lachney said. "One was kicking him with his feet, and the other was kicking him with his knee."
Lachney was taken to Lakeview Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery on Saturday afternoon. The Sheriff's Office said he fought emergency medical personnel while he was in the ambulance.
His mother said Lachney had been depressed and had called her on Saturday afternoon to see whether she would take two of his children, ages 11 and 6. She said he would not have hurt the children.
"He felt like he wanted to kill himself," Verla Mae Lachney said. "He wanted the police to shoot him. I guess he couldn't do it himself. He figured the police could do it for him."
Michael Lachney, of Bryant Road in Madisonville, has a criminal history that includes recent convictions for drunk driving and domestic abuse.
