I know this will probably make some eyes roll skeptically, but...

Have you guys ever thought on how you are going to care for your family in instances of instances of civil unrest, natural disasters, plagues, acts of terrorism, zombies, etc? As emergency responders we are likely to be called out for extended periods of time, but however hard the call of duty tugs at us, I don't think anyone here can seriously say they would go to work if their families were not at least relatively safe and secure. Some questions I've thought of are:
-Does your family have adequate food and water supplies to last for at least 7 days?
-Does your family have access to a basic first responder medical kit, stocked with analgesics, antibiotics, bandages, etc?
-Do you have some sort of evacuation plan to another place at least 50 miles away? Have you thought of alternative routes and destinations?
-Could your spouse adequately lead and/or defend your family if your were on duty and separated? Is your spouse a good mapreader (roads and terrain maps)?
-Is your spouse familiar/and or proficient with firearms?
-Do you have access to emergency communication gear (shortwave radios, satellite phones) in case the main communication hubs are out?

Just thinking...

- adequate food supply. check.
- first aid kit. check.
- evacuation plan. I live in the middle of nowhere.
- my wife cant find her ass with both hands, thus the defend in place mentality.
- she can however put a round thru a fleas ass at 100 yards.
- I have a fire pit for smoke signals. I am lucky I have a phone, period.

Since I've been on the job, we've had several of those things:Because of these things, we've been "prepared" for quite a while now. In today's society with all the crap happening around the world, including September 11th, we're (the police) gonna be it. If and when "it" happens, we're gonna be the ones to go. Speaking from experience, Killjoy is right, be prepared!

All I can say is look at what happened in New Orleans, that should be the
wake up call.

I have a 12 ga pump and camping gear, I think thats all I need, oh and my fishing rod. Boston destroyed, no problem, take the family on an extended camping trip to the White Mountains.

Run out of cash, credit card machine down, everyone accepts a shotgun.

Killjoy,

We're subject to state-wide deployment during hurricane season, so one thing that I did, was I went and took an overtime check and put all that stuff together in one giant rubbermaid container with wheels. If I get deployed for 2 weeks during a disaster, my wife has everything she needs in a portable container.
