Police department would receive $100K for new console
By RYAN MENARD
The Patriot Ledger

BRAINTREE - A grant program being deliberated in the U.S. Senate would replace the 20-year-old dispatch console at the police department, which Chief Paul Frazier says should have been replaced four years ago.

The program, part of the Commerce-Justice-Science Appropriations Act, was approved by the House on July 26. It includes $100,000 for the Braintree department to purchase the new console.

The console is used to communicate with officers in the field and other agencies. Frazier said the console now being used is in poor shape and can’t handle the town’s expanding needs.

‘‘Ours is falling apart,’’ he said. ‘‘Hopefully, this time next year we’ll have somewhat of a state-of-the-art communications center for the Town of Braintree.’’

A central location between Boston and southern communities, Braintree has become the emergency headquarters of the South Shore.

Braintree is the backup if Boston police need to operate outside the city. It is also an evacuation point for the Pilgrim nuclear power plant in Plymouth and has been designated by the Department of Homeland Security as being responsible for two possible terror targets - Clean Harbors and the South Shore Plaza.

The new console would have direct communication with the Coast Guard and departments and agencies farther away.

‘‘Hopefully, it’s a step in the right direction for us,’’ he said.

State Sen. Mike Morrissey and State Rep. Joe Driscoll and U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch worked with Frazier on the grant.
