MILFORD, N.H. -- Two people have been arrested and charged in connection with a string of fires in Milford.
Robert J. Bunce and Deric M. Larouche each face eight charges that range from burglary to arson.
Police said they were involved in several fires. The first one broke out at a house on Union Street late Thursday night. While firefighters battled that one, another fire was reported in a nearby trash bin.
While firefighters were on the way to that fire, three more fires were reported.
Friday afternoon, workers began the slow task of gathering evidence at the scene of the Union Street fire.
"This building is structurally unsound at this point," fire Chief Frank Fraitzl said. "It is under investigation, but it looks like we'll have to take the building apart to process the crime scene."
Bunce and Larouche were charged in connection with the Union Street fire, three trash bin fires and another fire set alongside some railroad tracks.
"The investigation revealed that these people were the ones responsible for these, and by virtue of the magnitude of the fires, it would indicate they were deliberately set," police Chief Fred Douglas said.
Gerard Ryan owned the Union Street property for more than 30 years, but no one was living in the building at the time of the fire.
"I'm flabbergasted," Ryan said. "It doesn't make much sense to me."
The building was undergoing renovations from another fire about two months ago that was not considered suspicious. He was hoping to sell the property, but now, he's not sure what to do.
"When I got woken up at quarter after 12 this morning, I thought someone was joking with me, so I came over here, and they obviously weren't," he said.
Bunce and Larouche were arraigned Friday afternoon in Nashua District Court.
