AUGUSTA, Maine --Eleven-year-old Adrienne Tucker, who rescued her infant sister during a gruesome scene in Palmyra in which her brother was shot to death last November, was cited by state police on Thursday for bravery.
But Tucker said during a ceremony in Augusta that she doesn't feel like a hero.
"It was scary," said Tucker, recalling the chaotic events Nov. 28 when her mother's boyfriend allegedly attacked her mother and shot her 13-year-old brother, Anthony Tucker, to death. Todd Curry has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to a murder charge.
When Adrienne, then 10, saw violence breaking out in the house, she scooped up her infant sister from her crib and awakened her brother, witnesses said.
"She ran with a 20-pound baby for a quarter of a mile," said Adrienne's mother, April Cooley.
Adrienne and others were honored by the Maine Public Safety Department at a ceremony in Augusta.
Larry Rose, a seven-year state police veteran who is active in charities that benefit children, was named Maine's Trooper of the Year.
Rose, of Troop A, patrols in Cumberland County and lives in North Yarmouth. Last year, he investigated or responded to 782 incidents. His main job is reconstructing highway accidents.
The father of three has volunteered for the Special Olympics, the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center.
Also honored was Thomas Harrison of Mexico, who was given a Colonel's Award for his quick response in transporting a wounded 9-year-old boy in June to the hospital, likely saving the boy's life.
Randall Huntley of Durham received a Colonel's Award for discovering key evidence buried in Pownal that led to the arrests of two men in connection with a double homicide in Lewiston.
Several local, state and federal law enforcement officials were also cited during the ceremony for bravery, meritorious or special service.
