(WBZ)CHARLESTOWN An act of vandalism has destroyed hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of artificial turf that was supposed to be installed at the Charlestown High School athletic fields.
According to Boston Mayor Tom Menino, the vandals ignited 35 rolls of the turf early Wednesday morning. The total damage is estimated to cost over $360,000.
"This cowardly act destroyed property paid for by the taxpayers of Boston and will deprive local kids and sports leagues of the use of their new playing fields," said Menino.
The turf was supposed to be used for a state-of-the-art athletic facility at the Charlestown school.
The deadline for the project, which was scheduled to be finished on September 1, has now been pushed back six weeks, as officials try and order more turf for the playing fields.
The destroyed turf was supposed to furnish a combination softball and multi-use sports field.
The mayor's office is asking anyone who may have any information regarding this incident to call the Boston Fire Department Arson Squad at 617.343.3324.
