Thank you, Gov. Deval Patrick. Thank you for finally saying no to a Massachusetts judge looking to take early retirement with a big fat kiss in the mail.
And the fact that the jurist who’s just been kicked to the curb is Easy Ernie Murphy is just, well, icing on the cake.
It’s amazing, this judicial perk known as the “involuntary disability provision.” It could more accurately be called the “embattled judges early retirement” law. Ernie is embattled, of course, by the fact that he’s got a hearing coming up in front of the Judicial Conduct Commission for a letter he wrote to the publisher of this newspaper. Apparently Ernie never got the memo about never writing when you can speak, never speaking when you can nod, and never nodding when you can wink.
His doctors say he’s suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Oh, the pain. So now he has decided to follow in the footsteps of so many others before him.
Here’s how the involuntary disability provision works: The governor decides that a judge can no longer continue his, ahem, arduous duties, and sends a petition to the Governor’s Council, which rubberstamps it.
