WEST SPRINGFIELD - A 43-year-old agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and a 19-year-old Springfield man were killed in a Wednesday night, head-on collision on Interstate 91, according to the Massachusetts State Police.
Special agent Kimberly Place, of Westfield, was pronounced dead at the scene following the 6:30 p.m. accident, according to police. The other driver, Eduardo Gonzalez, died at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, police said today.
Place was assigned to the bureau's Springfield office and served on the gun task force, according to the Associated Press. She was returning from an enforcement operation when the crash occurred.
Police believe Gonzalez's northbound vehicle went out of control, crossed the median and struck Place's vehicle head on in the southbound lanes. Speed may have been a factor.
State police continue to investigate the crash, which closed traffic in the southbound lane for 3½ hours.
