Man Charged With Assaulting Child

SEABROOK, N.H. -- Police said a tip led them to a violent gang member from Massachusetts who had been on the run for weeks.

Juan Luis Backus, 26, was arraigned on fugitive charges in Hampton District Court on Wednesday. Police said that he was wanted on charges of sexual assault on a child and assault and battery.

Police said Backus is a member of the Immortal Outlaws, a violent street gang out of Lawrence, Mass. Local officials and the FBI had been searching for him until a tip came in Tuesday that he was hiding in New Hampshire.

Backus was arrested at a mobile home park in North Hampton. Police said they don't know how long he was there, but they said they don't often have to deal with gang activity.

"During the summer months, the beach region here in New Hampshire does experience an influx of people," Lt. John Scippa said. "We do get an influx from those types of areas, and it does bring some criminality with it."

Backus waived his extradition, and he was scheduled to return to Massachusetts. Two Massachusetts State Police troopers were on their way to Rockingham County Jail to pick him up, and he could face charges in the Bay State later this week.
