SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A woman who set off a massive police search earlier this week after claiming she was kidnapped in Sacramento is now accused of committing an elaborate hoax and is facing criminal charges, Sacramento police said.
Sara White, 20, of Turlock, Calif., was arraigned Wednesday on a charge of abusing police dispatch services.
Sgt. Matt Young said the incident began Monday morning.
Young said White planned to meet someone at the park that she had met via the Internet. White got cold feet about the date and called the man, stating that three men had hit her over the head and tossed her in the back of a car, Young added.
White then claimed she was being driven all over the city in the trunk of the car.
The incident was reported to police, who called White on her cell phone. Young said White kept up with the act to police, telling officials she was being taken into a house.
White described a house in south Sacramento and police found a home that matched. In addition to Sacramento police, the California Highway Patrol and other police agencies got involved.
White then told police she was at a McDonald's and then a Wal-Mart, Young said.
Young said police later figured out the story was fake and caught up with White at her Turlock home
