Mom shocked at vicious attack
By Dan Atkinson
Staff Writer

NEWBURYPORT - The mother of the young man who was beaten unconscious early Saturday morning said she is stunned by the brutality of the attack in what is normally a quiet neighborhood.
"It's pretty shocking to have that happen on a street where we've lived for 21 years," said Mary Lou Supple, mother of Richard Colburn III. "I've never seen anything like that."
Supple said Colburn, 23, was walking on Water Street near Bromfield Street when two men jumped him from behind, knocked him to the ground and started kicking him.
The next thing her son knew, she said, he was in the emergency room. Colburn was later discharged, but he has several bone fractures and referrals to other doctors, Supple said.
Her son never saw the assault coming and the attackers did not take his wallet, indicating a more malicious desire to do harm, Supple said.
"(The kicks) were clearly aimed at doing damage fast," she said.
Police arrested a 16-year-old Salisbury resident a half hour after the attack after finding him hiding in the woods near the sewer plant.
The youth was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest, police said. Sgt. Howard Adams also characterized the attack as more vicious than normal.
"It wasn't a typical assault. It was much worse," Adams said.
Police are still investigating the assault, and it is unknown whether there is a second suspect. Sgt. Mark Murray said last night that police are still investigating. Lt. Richard Seimasko and Marshal Thomas Howard were not available for comment yesterday afternoon
