Police dog helps nab pair charged in housebreak

ANDOVER - Two men were arrested on burglary charges after a police dog tracked them 100 yards through the woods to another home, and found one of the men hiding in a basement crawl space there, Lt. James Hashem said.
Police also are investigating whether the two men are connected with a string of housebreaks reported in May and June, Hashem said.
Sunday's break on Blueberry Hill Road and several of the earlier breaks are similar in that the burglars entered the home through a second-story window, he said.
But in the earlier breaks, the burglars spotted a ladder on the property or a neighboring property and put it up against the house to get in the window.
"It appears in Sunday's break that one of the two men boosted the other up through a window on the second floor," Hashem said.
"One of them was tall and skinny," he said.
Police went to the home earlier in response to an alarm but the first floor appeared secure, Hashem said.
The homeowner discovered the break when he returned home about 3:15 p.m., Hashem said. The house had been ransacked and several thousand dollars worth of jewelry had been taken.
Sgt. Cecilia Blais and Officers Robin Cataldo, Chris Moore and Michael Connor with his police dog, Niko, went to the Blueberry Hill Road scene and tracked the scent of the suspected burglars through the woods behind the home. The dog led police to a home on Holt Road, where the owner denied any knowledge of the break.
He allowed the officers to search the house and Niko headed for the basement where he found one of the men hiding in a small crawl space behind a furnace, according to police.
Darren O'Hagan, 52, of 43 Whittier St., was arrested and charged with breaking and entering in the daytime with intent to commit a felony.
Byron Cleveland, 46, owner of the 130 Holt Road home, was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice and accessory before the fact of burglary, Hashem said.
Hashem said Detectives Peter Reming and David Milne are now working to determine whether the two men were involved in the earlier breaks.
