Man held in suspected rape during Salem party

SALEM — Police believe two women were raped during a party early Sunday morning and have charged a Lynn man in one of the incidents.

Dwayne Dillard, 27, pleaded not guilty to one count of rape at his arraignment yesterday in Salem District Court, where a judge ordered him held on $10,000 cash bail. His attorney said he adamantly denies the charge.

Salem police Lt. Conrad Prosniewski said police are also looking into a second reported sexual assault at the party, which took place in a development off Olde Village Drive, which is off Highland Avenue near the city line.

The first victim, a 19-year-old, told police that she decided to hold a party while her parents were away. After having three or four shots of liquor, she said, she decided to go to sleep on her parents’ bed as other guests — some 30 to 40 people — continued to party.

She told police she awoke to her cell phone ringing and realized there was a man on top of her. The person on the phone, she told police, was her boyfriend, whom she went to see immediately afterward. He drove her to Union Hospital in Lynn, where police were called.

When police went to the home to look for the suspected assailant, they found another young woman lying on a couch in the basement, completely naked and unconscious. It took several attempts by emergency medical technicians to wake the woman, who told them she believed she had been sexually assaulted. She told police she was drinking and using the drug Ecstasy.

Police have not charged anyone in that incident, which is still under investigation, Prosniewski said.

Defense lawyer Heidi Shore said Dillard, a student at Hesser College, “completely denies that any sort of rape or sexual assault took place.” Shore said there were a number of other men at the party.

She also questioned the legality of the police search.

Judge Robert Cornetta set bail at $10,000 cash, an amount Dillard is not expected to be able to post immediately. If he does, he was warned to stay at least 500 feet away from the home and have no contact with the woman or any witnesses.

A pretrial conference is scheduled for Aug. 22.
