NEW BEDFORD — A city man was arraigned Monday for allegedly stabbing a man in the back as the victim was walking down a flight of stairs Friday.
Christian J. Santiago, 17, of 6 McGurk St., was held on $10,000 surety after being charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault with intent to murder.
Mr. Santiago allegedly stabbed a man with a kitchen steak knife after seeing the victim inside his girlfriend's Rivet Street apartment, according to court records.
The victim was treated at St. Luke's Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. He suffered a half-inch wound to his lower right back and a gash on his forehead.
Prior to the attack, Mr. Santiago told police he had ordered the victim to leave the second-floor apartment. Minutes later, he saw him still standing next to his girlfriend. Mr. Santiago said he went to the kitchen, grabbed a knife from a counter and went after the victim, who had left the apartment.
The victim was walking down the stairs, carrying his bicycle, when Mr. Santiago stabbed him in the back, court records said. The victim turned around, and Mr. Santiago punched him in the face two to three times.
Mr. Santiago was walking down Rivet Street when a police officer responding to the incident stopped him, frisked him and put him inside a squad car, according to the arrest report. A police officer found a knife handle in the parking lot of the Ingraham Pre-School Center at 88 Rivet St. Mr. Santiago allegedly threw the handle there as he walked away from the apartment, the police report said.
The victim told police he thought he had been punched until he saw the knife blade in his back. He tried pulling the knife out, but the handle detached from the blade.
Mr. Santiago is scheduled to return to New Bedford District Court on Aug. 30 for a probable cause hearing.
