ANDREW T. GALLAGHER/Standard-Times special Roland W. Gendron is the new state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
By SARAH GONET Standard-Times correspondent July 29, 2007 6:00 AM NEW BEDFORD — Roland Gendron's commitment to his country didn't end with his 13-month tour of duty during the Korean War. The 74-year-old Marine Corps veteran was recently charged with his most recent assignment, state commander of the Massachusetts Veterans of Foreign Wars. "This is such an amazing honor for me," said Mr. Gendron, a retired New Bedford firefighter and father of three who will mark his 52nd anniversary with his wife, Rita, in November. "All of my life has built up to this. I can't even express how much this means to me." Adding to Mr. Gendron's distinction is the fact that the lifelong New Bedford resident is the first member of the armed forces from the city ever to be elected to the post, which dates back to 1899. "He's an amazing man and he should be recognized for his work," said Ward 1 City Councilor Linda Morad, who, along with Councilor-at-large Denis Lawrence, sponsored a recently approved City Council resolution recognizing Mr. Gendron's accomplishment. "He's what you would call a positive force in the community. Roland takes the time to stop and offer his help," Ms. Morad said. "We need more people like him in the community." A lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6643 in Freetown, Mr. Gendron has held every office in District 6 and has served as the state POW chairman for 18 years. A vocal advocate for veterans rights, Mr. Gendron also is active in the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus and American Legion. In his spare time he purchases used wheelchairs and walkers, which he repairs and donates to people in need. But while Mr. Gendron's accomplishments are diverse, his work with youths in the community takes top billing in his eyes. "My feeling is if we start teaching them respect for their country when they're young, then it will stick with them. These kids are our future," said Mr. Gendron, who for nearly 20 years has visited the city's elementary schools each year to teach the students about the origins and meaning of the American flag. "Simple things, like how to respect the flag, are so important." In his new position, Mr. Gendron will be responsible for all activities that take place at VFW posts throughout the state. He will report directly to the National Commander of the VFW in Washington, D.C.
