Declaring him in default, a district court judge has ordered an Army National Guard sergeant to appear before him Monday to answer for his alleged role in a brutal attack on an interracial couple last month in South Boston.

Unlike his two co-defendants and fellow soldiers, Thomas Browne, 24, of Malden - whose redeployment to Iraq has been put on hold by the charges - was a no-show yesterday in the South Boston Division of Boston Municipal Court.

An attorney for Browne explained to Judge Robert P. Ziemian that his client’s case involves potential eyewitness problems.

Just a couple hours after Bridget Stone, a white woman, and her black boyfriend, Ralph Beach Jr., were allegedly jumped and pummeled by the trio amid a volley of profanity and racial slurs, Browne was involved in a bar fight at The 6 House in Southie that left his friend Adam Rich dead.

The murder received widespread news coverage.

Rich, 26, of Revere, had been a suspect in the alleged racial incident outside a party at the Columbia Yacht Club.

Army National Guardsmen Robert Stone, 25, who is Bridget Stone’s brother, and James Caponigro, 31, of Lynnfield, were released on personal recognizance after pleading not guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (a shod foot), assault and battery, and committing a civil rights violation with injury.

Prosecutors asked Ziemian to hold the soldiers on $10,000 cash bail each.

Jake Wark, spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley, declined comment.
