Anyone have any info on the MA Environmental Police? Im specifically looking for recruitment info, I could not find it on the website (I could just be having a brain-fart...) Anyone know the salary? Benefits? Requirements/Qualifications? Basic Duties?

Any info is greatly appreciated, thanks ahead of time

It is very hard to get in with them. I used to work as a dispatcher for them and know all about it. PM for more info.

It looks like a pretty cool job...not for everybody, though: it's a pretty narrow speciality, almost a religion for some of those guys.

Too, they have a ton of knowledge that would be beneficial to any cop here...if you need help concerning an area of their expertise: call them, I've always found them to be more than ready to help you out.

Back on topic:

I think that getting on that job requires the assistance of someone adept at the "mystic arts"...think Doc Strange...

Hey, that's the rumor...don't blame me!

Thank you DH18 for those links. I'm sure they will be helpful. On another note please don't advertise the Billerica office, it's supposed to be a secret.

Thanks alot for the responses, I'll check out those links and see what's up

Definitely don't call the 1-800 number between 1400 and 2200 they tend to be grumpy if you wake them up......
The last two hirings have gone through the Boston PD Academy. I think we have 5 or 6 attending there now. Previously it was whatever training council academy (Norwood, Plymouth, etc.) that was convenient to time frame of hiring. But ever since the Council had an identity crisis and changed their name we no longer attend their academy or in-service. We now do in-service on line through the MSP.
We also attend about a six-month EPO academy after the Police academy to cover all the specialty things.

Don't know since they cannot attend any MPTC academy anymore. Also no CH90 as their bill to get them didn't pass but the state campus PDs did get it.

They don't have Chapter 90....I thought they did.....

I do know that they hate the Trial Court, as they don't like checking their weapons when they come into the building.....Its an on going feud, which is complete B.S.....I feel like an ass when I ask them to do it, but hey its Trial Court Policy, however silly it is...Most guys are good about it....some get pissed...Just funny how this state works some times....

No disrespect to the EPO's at all, you do a great job and I have all the respect in the world for you....Hopefully they will finally approve you guys....

Most EPO's that I talk to....errr I should say that are willing to talk to me after I piss them off, seem to be pretty down to earth guys....Good group, squared away....

Love the green BDU's

Why can't they bring weapons into the courthouse?

I thought you needed Ch. 90 to enforce all of those Ch. 90B laws. Doesn't make sense to me.

They have the authority to enforce Chapter 90, but in their infinite wisdom the Legislature forgot (intentionally or through negligence) to include their director in the definition of "police chief", so they can't obtain citation books.

So, if I were to tear a citation out of my book and give it to an EPO, he/she could write a violation no problem, but the RMV won't give them citation books.

Welcome to Massachusetts politics.

We have chapter 90, . As Delta stated we have the authority but our Colonel was left off of the Chapter 90C list to be issued the books. This has been an issue for a few years now. It mostly an administrative issue that we are trying to rectify by filing bills and speaking to the Registrar. We have no resolution as of yet. Mainly due to a larger Department who look at the correction of 90C to include our Colonel as us attempting to get a new authority and find it as threatening as the S.D.'s trying to get the books. How an 80 man department, who has had the authority since our creation can be a threat to a department with over 3,000 is beyond me. We still have the books and are still writing the V's. The 90B all terrain vehicle violations must be written on a 90 book and yes the straight 90 violations. (Commonwealth wide not restricted to the Parks.)
The court issue is out in the central part of state. The Court Officer or Official in charge of Court Security has decided that EPO's and Umass Campus Police (Both with F/T Academies) can no longer carry their weapons in the Mass. Courts. However a P/T Officer from Podunk PD with only a R/I Academy (no offense) walks right in. We are deputized federally by NMFS, Federal Fish and Wild Life and Customs. We qualify at the range twice a year to the federal standards, which are stricter than the Mass standards. We do not have designated Court Officers so I write a ticket to Bubba for noodling cat fish, I sit across from Bubba in the clerks Office. It is definitely politically motivated. (Somebody got gigged and wasn't happy) Just another day as the Ugly Step child of the state budget/sytem.

That is just ridiculous, I would not abide by that non-sense. I heard Boston gives you guys the books for now. Great job, keep up the good work.

Posted by: Foxy85

The thing is they don't...Alot of guys get really pissed when you ask them to check their weapons (rightfully so), and then walk out of the court house....needless to say the EPO citations have dropped emmensely because they simply won't bother with that area because it goes to X Court House....

The problem...it is a statewide policy that EPO's can't carry in the courts...for whatever reason.....however depending on who is in charge of that courthouse, they may not enforce the trial court regulation.....so EPO guy goes to Quincy court and they don't enforce the weapon checking....then EPO guy goes to East Brookfield court and they enforce it.....its screwed up.....nothing is standard with the TRC....

Though, UMass, and I have a memo on it in my desk, has obtained the approval from the Trial Court gods in Boston to carry in the Courts....Though, I believe it only applies to the Officers out in UMass Amherst....Its stupid...

Siding with the Environmental police on this one....makes no sense....otehr than what everyone has said....simply politics...
