NEW BEDFORD — Police arrested a 21-year-old homeless man Sunday for a South End shooting that left an 18-year-old city man injured. Police believe Michael Sylvia and three or four other males approached Hector Rodriguez of New Bedford at 11:45 p.m. on July 15 as he was walking in the area of Ruth and Ashley streets. Capt. Richard Spirlet, a New Bedford police spokesman, said there was a verbal argument between the victim and the group. He said Mr. Sylvia pointed a gun at Mr. Rodriguez and shot him in his left thigh. The victim was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for a non-life threatening wound. Initially, the victim was less than cooperative with investigators, Capt. Spirlet said. However, police eventually learned the suspected shooter was described as a white male, approximately 5 feet 10 inches with long braided hair. After a week into the investigation, police obtained an arrest warrant for Mr. Sylvia. Police Chief Ronald E. Teachman said Mr. Sylvia has a previous arrest record. "We've had a number of dealings with him over the years," Chief Teachman said. "He's well known to the police." Police believe Mr. Sylvia shot Mr. Rodriguez, Chief Teachman said. He is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and assault with intent to murder. The motive for the shooting is under investigation, Chief Teachman said. It is not clear if the shooting was gang-related. Police are also looking for the other men who were said to be present with Mr. Sylvia at the time of the shooting.
