JOHN SLADEWSKI/The Standard-Times Nathaniel DePina is arraigned at Third District Court for shooting and gun charges Wednesday. He is being held without bail.
NEW BEDFORD — A teenager is being held without bail in connection with the shooting of an Assonet man Tuesday night near the United Front housing development. Judge David Turcotte held Nathaniel DePina, 17, of 406 Union St., on attempted murder and weapons charges during a very brief arraignment Wednesday morning at Third District Court. Handcuffed and shackled, Mr. DePina smiled to a large group of supporters as he walked in the courtroom during his brief appearance before Judge Turcotte. He is charged with shooting James Bean, 19, of Assonet, in the back, in the area of Park and Kempton streets around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday. The men know each other and are known to police, Capt. Richard Spirlet, a police spokesman, said. The shooting remains under investigation. "They're trying to find out what the cause is, but these guys don't talk," Capt. Spirlet said. "They're not saying anything." Police found Mr. Bean at the intersection suffering from a gunshot wound to the back after reports of several shots fired in the area. He was initially transported to St. Luke's Hospital and later to Boston Medical Center, police said. His injuries do not appear to be life threatening, police said. Witnesses at the scene gave a description of the suspect as well as a direction of travel. Given the saturation of police gang unit officers and members of the Southeastern Massachusetts Gang Task Force holding an unrelated joint operation in the area, police quickly located the suspect as he fled south on Emerson Street, police said. As police attempted to stop Mr. DePina, they saw him toss a loaded .22 caliber revolver on the ground. Police also seized a scooter the victim had been riding before the shooting, police said. Police charged Mr. DePina with armed assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a residence, armed assault with intent to rob by firearm, armed robbery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, and carrying a loaded firearm. Anyone with information about the incident should contact the police Detective Division at (508 991-6320 or the Anonymous Tip Line at (508 961-4584.
