MERRIMACK, N.H. -- A door-to-door magazine saleswoman was charged with stealing thousands of dollars worth of items from a Merrimack home.
Police said that Terri Hall was selling magazine subscriptions on July 11, but when she got to 31 Naticook Road, she found the house empty and went inside.
"A resident came home and found items missing -- jewelry and other personal belongings," Capt. Mike Dudash said.
Investigators said Hall stole $7,500 worth of items belonging to Thomas Mahon, a member of the Merrimack Town Council.
Hall was arrested after detectives determined that someone had been selling magazines in the area that day, and they contacted the magazine company.
"At that point, with the assistance of the magazine company, they located the personal belongings in the hotel room of Terri Hall," Dudash said.
Hall was arrested after returning to New Hampshire from Massachusetts. Bail was set at $10,000.
Police said that the magazine company cooperated fully with the investigation. Dudash said residents can check to make sure that such companies are operating legally.
"In the town of Merrimack, we do require companies such as a magazine company to log in with us when they are in the area," he said.
Because Mahon is a member of the town council, the judge recused himself from the case Wednesday morning and recommended that it be turned over to the county attorney's office.
Anyone else have problems with these solicitors? Every year they come around and they cause nothing but trouble...but per CT law - we can't run their criminal history to see if they're wanted or anything....it's such a pain in the ass.

We have had a huge problem with them this year. A few weeks ago I was at my home sleeping, and kept hearing the doorbell ring but didnt feel like getting up, got up like 15 minutes later thinking their was a package or somthing to see some 17 year old kid on my back porch looking into the slider. I just about almost lost it. I thought he was breaking in. I go around back and order the kid onto the driveway. Now this kid (holding a stack of magazines) looks like he's been doing coke for 2 hours straight. I ask him what the hell he was doing in my back yard, he told me "seeing if anyone was home", then he asked me "son, is your mother home"... I said "are you f'n kidding me", to which he replied "while who's truck is this (like the kid didn't believe me), I replied "its mine", he then said "you dont look old enough to drive", to which I replied "get the f8ck off my lawn". (FYI im an adult...and can drive.. lol) I honestly believe if I had not caught this kid in my back yard on my porch looking into my window, he would have probably broken in.

Our biggest problem with these people, besides them breaking in (about 1/2 of them every year get caught committing burgs)....I work in a small little uber-white community...we get so many 911 calls about "A black person walking down the road."....But it ends up giving us a reason to suspend their permit to solicit in town, because we do Criminal History checks at this point and realize they all lied on their applications.
