HAMILTON CITY, Calif. — A Glenn County sheriff's deputy said at least three vehicles passed by late Friday night without stopping as he struggled with a male suspect on Highway 32 near Irvine Finch River Access. Deputy Craig Bauer said he was following a Buick sedan with its taillights out east on 32 from Hamilton City at about 11:20 p.m. He stopped the vehicle near the entrance to Irvine Finch, where the driver gave his name as Thomas Arthur Noble, 23, but claimed his driver's license had been stolen and had no identification. Through his address on Mariposa Avenue in Chico, Bauer learned the man was driving on a suspended license. The deputy told the man he was being arrested, and had placed handcuffs on his left wrist when the suspect pulled away, in an attempt to flee. Bauer held onto the handcuffs, and attempted to get a hold on the man's right wrist. The deputy said at least two vehicles driving west passed by the scene, but he doesn't know if they noticed the struggle. A vehicle traveling east approached the area, and Bauer said the driver had to brake and swerve to avoid hitting him and the suspect. Glenn County Sheriff Larry Jones said the traffic stop was at a curve, and motorists may have considered it too dangerous to stop. Jones added there were no reports of 9-1-1 calls to report the incident. Bauer was holding onto the man's shirt when it tore away, allowing the suspect to run toward a barbed wire fence, which he jumped and fled into an orchard. A search for the suspect, who escaped with the handcuffs, was unsuccessful. A search of the vehicle uncovered a California ID card in the name of Larry Daniel Sage, probably the suspect's real name. Sage is currently on probation in Butte County for failing to yield to law enforcement while driving a vehicle. The suspect's employer, in Orland, said Sage left work earlier Friday to run an errand and didn't return. An arrest warrant for Sage has been requested. Anyone with information about the man is asked to call the Glenn County Sheriff's Office at 934-6431. Wire Services
