Police kill a local soldier in downtown Baltimore. Army Corporal Alexander Larkin was shot and killed by a Baltimore city officer early Sunday morning after he allegedly fired at the officer. But, the soldier's mother is telling a different story. ABC2 news Linda So explains. Corporal Larkin and a friend were apparently enjoying a night in Baltimore going to clubs. Larkin's mother says during the course of the evening, a fight broke out, they were approached by a Baltimore city cop who told Larkin to drop his gun. But before he got a chance to do anything, she says the officer opened fire on Larkin and shot him 5 times. Larkin’s fiancée Teal Lipscomb says, "Alex was a wonderful strong minded man... He had so many goals." Pictures of Larkin show a man who was proud to serve his country. But police say the 25 year old soldier from Silver Spring nearly killed a Baltimore city cop early Sunday morning. Officer Nicole Monroe with the Baltimore City Police Department says, "He did brandish a weapon. He did fire at the officer first and the officer returned fire in fear for his life." Police say Larkin and a friend were in the Harbor Park parking garage when they got into a fight with two other men. A uniformed officer working security in the area approached the group to try to break up the fight. Officer Monroe says, "The officer used verbal commands and mace. Subsequently the suspect brandished a handgun, fired upon the officer, the officer returned fire striking the suspect numerous times." But Larkin’s fiancée says she doesn’t believe what police are saying. The officer was not hurt. Larkin was pronounced dead on the scene. Police say the weapon Larkin used was a 50-caliber desert eagle. It's unknown if the weapon he used was issued by the military. But Larkin's mother says it was legal and registered to her son. Family members say Larkin was in the military for 4 years and served in Iraq 2 years ago. He's survived by a 3 year old son. A military official says Larkin was stationed at Fort Meade serving in a military intelligence unit before he was killed. Larkin's fiancee says they were going to get married this weekend. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

I hope that the officer gets the appropriate post-shooting help from Baltimore PD.
Sounds like the media bashing has begun! I wonder if the local rag writers would have reported it if the assailant was a local plumber?
