The Associated Press Posted : Saturday Jul 21, 2007 12:09:46 EDT MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — After a 10-hour standoff, officers finally subdued an armed Gulf War veteran who had barricaded himself inside his home. Officers first went to the home of Steven L. Cox, 48, around 10:30 a.m. Friday to take him for a court-ordered mental evaluation, Hamblen County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Wayne Mize said. Cox’s parents had told authorities he’d become paranoid, refusing to eat and accusing his family of trying to poison him. Cox’s mother let the officers inside the house, but he retreated to a bedroom, where he tried to shut the door and pulled a gun on officers when they approached. Sgt. Jimmy Mullins pulled his Taser stun gun, but the gun didn’t fire, Mize said, and Cox barricaded himself in the bedroom. After trying to flush him out with pepper gas, officers eventually were able to creep back inside the house through the back door, Mize said. They again fired a stun gun, and this time it worked. Officers took Cox to Morristown-Hamblen Hospital before going to a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital for the mental evaluation. “It’s a bad situation that ended well,” Mize said. “He’s not really a bad guy, just a little delusional.” The Army veteran faces a charge of aggravated assault on a police officer.
