Contiguous state purchase for long guns?

Hey SOT! (or anybody)

Can a purchase be made in N.H. or CT by a Mass resident for long guns?

Ahhhh...
SOT? anybody?

There is no law requiring a Contiguous state purchase of long guns.
Long guns may be purchased in any state that allows it, so long as the purchase is legal in that state and your state.
As a MA resident, you would be required to fill out an FA-10 to register your purchase within seven days of your return to MA.

Short version: Yeah you can purchase, although many places will not sell to you because they are adverse to selling to MA residents. Not a law, just a policy by the store.

Be sure to thank the AG's office for that little gem.

Federal law prohibits the sale of pistols to individuals except in their "home state" of residence. So if you live in MA and have an MA drivers license and permit, you can only buy pistols in MA.

In regards to approved weapons.... If a weapon is on the list.... does that mean that the same style weapon is also legal? As example... I'm looking for a HK91... cant find one for a respectable price... am I able to pick up the PTR91 in its place? From what I understand its pretty much the same long gun? Does each specific manufacturer have to go thru testing or because HK did the testing and other use similars specs it would be acceptable?

The HK91 is an assault rifle, no new assault rifles are allowed in MA. So something like it that was made after 1994 would be prohibited in MA.

Thanks SOT... I guess I am confused now because I thought that everything on the approved roster is available in MA. Isn't that the purpose of the roster?

Gun laws in this state are so confusing!

The mistake you are making is thinking that's an "approval roster".
The approval roster is ONLY for handguns and even then just being on the roster does not mean you can buy it in MA.

That is the high capacity firearms roster. It's gives the names of guns that are considered high capacity, and would require (on rifles and shotguns) at least a Class B.

To that end MA still has an assault weapons ban, so any rifle made after 1994 that would have been considered an "assault weapon" would be banned. The PTR91 in most configurations would meet this:
Detachable magazine
Pistol Grip
Flash Hider
Collapsible Stock
Bayonet Lug
Threaded Barrel

I think there may be a couple that are MA OK...but note that if the rifle was banned by name, any copies are banned by default. So if in the AWB they said, HK91...anything like it would be banned as well.
