Barre chooses Athol applicant

Part-time officer served Petersham

BARRE— Selectmen voted unanimously this week to appoint Athol resident Jason P. Lichtenberger as a part-time police officer on the recommendation of Police Chief Erik J. Demetropoulos.

Mr. Lichtenberger has been a part-time officer in Petersham the past year and a half and works for Athol’s Highway Department, the chief said. Mr. Lichtenberger was a police dispatcher in Athol, Chief Demetropoulos said.

In other business Monday, selectmen met jointly with Woods Memorial Library trustees. The two boards unanimously appointed John O’Leary as a trustee to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Gordon Robinson. The vote was not without controversy.

Frank Q. Jones, who submitted a letter of interest for the vacancy, criticized Mr. O’Leary, calling him “a stooge” of the Barre Library Association, while urging selectmen and the trustees to reject Mr. O’Leary’s candidacy. Mr. O’Leary did not attend the meeting. The appointment runs until the April 2008 town election.

In a related matter, trustees told selectmen they are likely to name Stephanie Young as interim library director at a meeting later this month. Ms. Young is currently on staff. Librarian James K. Knowlton is slated to become director of the Middletown, R.I., public library next week.

In another matter, Town Administrator Kevin J. Flynn said officials still have not been officially notified by the state that Barre’s application for a $800,000 federal block grant, which was sought to fix the water system in several South Barre neighborhoods, was rejected.

Resident Francis J. Gromelski Jr. said he was disappointed the grant application, written by Mr. Flynn, was unsuccessful. Mr. Gromelski asked Mr. Flynn, “Where do we go from here? This is the third year in a row” the town failed to obtain the grant.

“That is something we are going to have to talk about in the next few months,” Mr. Flynn responded.
