What is the process/likelihood/or path for transferring from a none-CS department to a CS-Department?

There is no such path that I know of. You get experience credit during the CS exam process and a waived academy in most cases if you are hired. Some towns have jumped into CS giving current officers instant status. I think you will see this less and less. I live in Western Mass and many CS departments have talked about jumping out. Northampton jumped out a couple of years ago after they got into a dispute with CS about having to hire some people they didn't like.

Is there a long term benefit to going to a CS department over a none CS Department? Is the pay/benefits usually better at a CS department or does it just depend on the department/community?

It totally depends on the department, but as a general rule, CS departments have better pay & benefits, plus you have CS protection against unwarranted discipline/termination. That doesn't mean as much as it used to, but it's another layer of protection for employees.

Yarmouth PD is well regarded.

Most non-CS departments are down the Cape and out West.

I'm not sure why people think this but Civil Service has NOTHING to do with pay or benefits. Most NON CS P.Ds are in Central/Western MA although there are a number of them scattered throught SE MA. Most towns on the Cape are non CS as Delta eluded to, but did not hire alot in the time I was down there, except for my P.D and that I wouldnt wish on anyone. I am now in Western/Central MA. I would say the benefits of CS would be one more layer of protection, and of course depending on where you want to work. If you can get into the system you have the benefit of going to a P.D you otherwise could not get into if you were in a non-CS dept. I decided to make the jump from non-CS to CS, I feel it will benefit me in the long run. I say get into CS if you can. BTW SMD did you ever sign for P-town, I did and was gonna take until my situation changed. They actually went throught the list of 120 names I think twice, how many CS PDS do you know of where you can get hired with a 70 and be the very last name on the list, ask my buddie, he did, lol.

I don't think anyone said that, but as a general rule the best PD's in MA as far as pay & benefits are civil service.

BTW, the Non-CS to CS lateral doesn't make sense.
