no. they say that to get you interested, then when you accept the job and move out there they drop the bomb and tell you they are gonna pay you 18k a year.

Yes, salaries are really that high. The cost of living in many areas there is much higher than in this area and you will be in for some real sticker shock when you pull into a gas station.

All very true, although we're only about 15 cents ahead of Mass in gas prices, which surpised me.

There are however some parts of California where property is somewhat reasonable.

You don't get a cruiser, a kid i know is CHP, he said that there are not enough cruisers for them and they were trying to eliminate one shift by restructuring their shifts so they would have enough cars.

It depends where they're assigned. There are some parts of the state where the Chippies do get a take home car but for the most part you're right, they don't get take home cars like the Mass Staties do.

I would venture to guess that theres something in the neighborhood of 10 or more times the number of CHP guys than MSP...Look at the size of Cali...

That sounds about right... And they're still only the third largest agency in the state. LAPD currently has about 9600 officers and LASD has about 8500 deputies.

the Nevada Highway Patrol only has 500 Troopers as opposed to 2,700 Police Officers in the Las Vegas Metro Police.Troopers here are strictly traffic enforcement.

The other thing that east coast folks must keep in mind, if considering joining the California Highway Patrol, is that they are not a "State Police" agency in the same sense as the Mass State Police, or the New York State Police, etc. The California Highway Patrol is primarily a traffic enforcement agency.........up until not too long ago, their badges read "State Traffic Officer" though I think that has been changed in recent years. And yes, I know they do some other stuff too, like guard the Governor and the State Capitol, and they do auto theft stuff, and some cargo theft and narco things (usually as part of task forces with other agencies); and they do State infrastructure protection. And they have K-9's and aircraft and motors and lots of neat equipment, and they are a very professional agency. But if you join, you better love traffic, traffic and more traffic (enforcement). If you want to do primarily criminal enforcement (patrol) or criminal investigation (Detective stuff) in California, join a Police Department or a Sheriff's Department.

I wouldn't say all agencies are equal per se. Every agency has it's unique things about it. For the most part, their missions are the same, however.

That is what I thought! I just like the freedom that I can move through out the state and not lock in one town or city
