State Police in Boston?

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

From what I've read on the State Police web site, most new troopers are assigned to western Mass., is this still the case? Would a a new trooper have any chance of being assigned to the Boston area straight out of academy? Is it possible to spend a majority of a State Police career in the Boston area?

Your first assignment is based on the needs of the department. It is possible (but not entirely likely) to spend one's entire career in the Boston career. Some guys were even assigned to the airport right after the academy and never left, but that was a long time ago.

Best advice? If you're concerend about having to work somewhere other than the 617 area code, this might not be the job for you. Nobody wants to work with somebody who constantly bitches that he or she got "shipped west." Another source of annoyance for senior Troopers? Watching guys with ten minutes on the job start dropping dimes to get choice assignments instead of paying their dues like everybody else.

Good luck with your career path.

A number of my classmates initially lived in the Boston area, but decided to move 'west after graduation, where we actually have trees and lawns and they all love it. Not only can you get far more land and far more house out west, there are some great Troopers that work out here (not that there's not great ones out east). Massachusetts does continue west of 128 believe it or not. Your first concern should be scoring high on the next MSP exam, whenever that is, not whether you'll get to work in Boston. One step at a time...Good luck.

Thanks for the replies, If I'm able to get on the State Police, I'll go where ever needed, I was just curious thats all.

I am to old now (36) I would be happy to go west, east, south, North where ever! JUst being a Mass. state trooper would be such an honor as far as I'm concerned but hey what do I know. Good luck, stay safe!

not everyone on the MSP wants to work in metro Boston. Twenty six years and have never left Cape Cod. Not a bad job...

Of course you could get assigned to Boston right out of the academy...haven't you seen "The Departed"? Not only could you get assigned to Boston, but go right to into a specialized detective unit...and make Sargent in about 6 months!

Speaking of The Departed, the SPA didn't look so tough. I mean shit, even the Fat Albert looking trooper (who went 'ocean frank 'outside the elevator)made it.

I wish I could say that has never happened, but...

Hmm, I guess the old saying "it's not who you know, it's who you blow" is true.

I thought that that didn't happen anymore on police forces.

A friend of mines cousin is a trooper, and he asked what town i lived in and came up with almost automatically where i would be placed when i got out of the academy. Is there a certain formula to take you away from your home area? or whats the deal?

... Apparantely reading the whole thread is too difficult. Dane answered this:

There have been troopers from the 77th, 78th and 79th who have had break-in in A troop and subsequently stayed here. I was first assigned out west, then after the merger in the registry and now in the east.

As far as distance from you house.. I've known people who live in the Cape and been assigned to Cheshire. Go mapquest that travel time.

Here's a hint: We are the STATE POLICE. If you are worried about travel time, find another job.

I met a trooper who lives close to boston but is assigned out west. He just drives to his troop every morning. As far as living out there...no thanks, i dated a girl that went to umass and its too rural out there for me. Your only link with boston is rt.9 or the pike. Good luck to what you decide.

Yes, Springfield is very rural. You have to love all the beautiful farm animals there.

I have seen many towns in Eastern Mass that are just as rural as any area out in WMass.

UMass is in Amherst and surrounded by farm towns, it is not indicative of the entire area.

Good thing she didn't live in Monroe or Heath...you'd have never found your way home!
