NEW BEDFORD — Narcotics detectives arrested seven people Monday while targeting street-level drug sales in the city's West End. Four of the individuals arrested are well-known drug associates in the area, police said. Detectives seized cocaine, marijuana and more than $5,000 in cash. Richard Ribeiro, 33, of 617 Summer St., was arrested after detectives observed a suspected drug transaction in the area of Summer and Adams streets. Police said they found cocaine, marijuana and $3,000 cash on Mr. Ribeiro, who reportedly tried to discard the cocaine after being approached by police and then resisted arrest. Police also arrested Joseph Clement, 143 Court St., who was allegedly found in possession of cash and 7 grams of cocaine. He and Mr. Ribeiro were charged with selling cocaine and other narcotics-related offenses. Police seized Mr. Clement's phone and received numerous calls from customers looking to purchase drugs, police said. Detectives made arrangements with one would-be customer: Keith Grace, 54, of 49 North St. Police arrested him and charged him with drug possession. Detectives later arrested three men after observing another suspected drug transaction in the area of Sycamore and Summer streets. Police stopped Joanne Merrigan, 43, of 121 Ebony St., and David Whelan, 49, of 117 Hillman St. They were charged with possession of crack cocaine. The detectives identified the dealers as Terrell Barros, 18, of 263 Ash St., and Austin Gonsalves, 20, of 89 Park St. Police charged them with selling cocaine. Police said Mr. Barros and Mr. Gonsalves were in possession of $1,900 in cash, which was seized by the detectives.
