DIAMOND BAR, Calif. — Deputies on Monday afternoon searched a neighborhood near Diamond Bar Boulevard and Golden Springs Avenue for a bank robber who made off with a large amount of money, authorities said. The China Trust Bank, 315 S. Diamond Bar Blvd., was held up about 1 p.m., said Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Angie Wilkinson. The robber was described as a Latino man, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighing 200 to 230 pounds. "The suspect was described as wearing a gray long-sleeved shirt, dark pants, possibly Levis, and a straw hat," Wilkinson said. "He was last seen running toward Kmart." Wilkinson said the man made off with about $3,000. Bank robberies are typically investigated by the FBI. Authorities said the suspect's straw hat was unusual. "It was described as kind of like the ones gardeners wear," sheriff's Sgt. Cruz Solis said. "It was a large, floppy straw hat." Solis said no dye pack was used to track the stolen money. "Those have proved ineffective," he said. Typically, banks install a radio frequency transmitter in "bait money" given to robbers, Solis said. It is unclear whether the money in this robbery contained a similar device.
