Does anyone have any info on this dept in the boston area? Are they active?, any state powers?, good equiptment?, where exactly do they patrol?

Thanks

The VA Police in Boston patrol there federal property only. They train in Little Rock Arkansas. They do carry firearms. They really like to hire veterans. I put in for the job and interviewed for the job with 3 years corrections and the reserve academy and I did not qualify for the job. I dont know I guess it doesnt hurt to try.

yes they are active (professionally & sexually) They do have "state" powers under the assimiliative crime statute section of Title 18 USC, and a concurrent jurisdiction agreement signed in 1976 by the U.S. District Attorney and the Mass Attorney General. They have good GSA-issued vehicles and decent issued gear. They patrol main properties in Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury, and some satellite properties like clinics. Damn fine gig!

They only like to hire veterans like the DOD does.

Depends, I know DOD and VA cops who have never served a day in the military.

I cut this from another thread, so I wouldn't have to re-type the whole thing! Again, be wary of the VA! Towads the end, I never left the station if I could help it, for fear of gettin paper hung on me for doing my job. They REALLY don't like you doin Ch 90! And, unfortunately, I like doin Ch 90. As far as qualifying, you need ONE YEAR (1) of FULL TIME POLICE EXPERIENCE (Military or Civilian). Or a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. Being a Vet is a definite plus. As far as a stepping stone, In the last 8 years out of 40-50 officers (Guestimate), I THINK- 2- MSP, 1- Transit PD, 2- Boston PD (1 they tried to fire when he left), 2- FPS, and 2-3 to other local PD's. Almost all of us went there as a "stepping stone", most never leave for "real jobs" (notice VA Cops I put that in quotes). Alot either "just left" or faded away. Again the job has potential. I made alot of quality arrests there, especially at JP. Just be careful!

Good luck. I'm out for a year! See you all on the flip side. Next post coming to you from North West Iraq

Here is a Qualified thought about the VA Police. I worked there for 4 years before getting the nod. The VA is a weird animal. Most of the Officers are R-9 (Excellent), however, the management BLOWS. As a VA Cop (Federal Police Officer), you have all the power in the world (VAPD Boston/Brockton has both State and Federal arrest authority), however, the administration and Department Policies severly limit you. I used to push the envelope and do alot of work. And when I did, I got into the Shiiate with the bosses. Also there is no loyalty to the people. If you make the slightest mistake, they come at you with both barrels and try to hang you. The money is pretty good, I was a GS-08 when I left with the Law Enforcement stipend and, with some overtime, I think I pulled something like $75K my last full year. As far as a stepping stone, NOT A CHANCE. Very few of us escaped the VA. The bosses LOVE to hang paper on you, which could severly hurt you in a backround invest. Also, training is basically Non-Exsistant. All of the outside training I went to I did on my own time, on my own dime. With all of that said, I did get alot out of it, especially people skills. Dealing with alot of our "not so steallar" Vets (IE: drunks, druggies, psyco's, and A-Holes) has helped me alot for work on the streets. I also have a MUCH GREATER appreciation for the job I have! My final thought about the VA is if they can get good management in there it will be a hell of a job. Till then, they are just fighting an up hill battle, internal and external. Just my $.02. Good luck.
