A sheriff's deputy and lieutenant from the fire department rescued four people this morning after a fire engulfed a Spotsylvania home, Deputy Fire Chief Nick Caputo said today. The deputy and fire lieutenant arrived at the Bragg Road home just before 4 a.m. One of them banged on the door, made a lap around the house and heard a commotion, Caputo said.
The two then assisted the family by breaking out a window on the side rear of the house and helping the family members, including at least one child, escape the fire, he said.
All four occupants sustained minor cuts and scrapes while crawling out of the window. They were taken to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment.
Caputo said the ranch-style home, in the 1500 block of Bragg Road, sustained heavy damage, but he thought it could be rebuilt.
Three county fire engines, four ambulances and two ladder trucks - including one from Fredericksburg - responded to the scene.
The fire was brought under control in less than 30 minutes, Caputo said.
He said it was unclear whether the home had a working fire alarm, and the fire remains under investigation. Arson had not been ruled out, he said.
Caputo did not know the name of the sheriff's deputy who helped the family.
