Need Some Help

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Hi all, I need some help with something...first some background info. I have a girlfriend that is in LE full time and is a dispatcher for the town that she lives in. She works part time for this dept and has had some issues with getting shifts because the people she has given her schedule to do not schedule her for the shifts she can work. So she applies for one of three open part time police officer positions (at the encouragement of all in the dept). She is certified in Sex Assaults and is a RAD Instructor and has other certifications and has completed a tough academy (not just the Reserve Academy)...now this particular dept does not have any female officers and definately needs one. The three positions have been filled a couple of times from the last open job posting by males... and the reason they gave her for not hiring her is that it is because of her availability. My question is this what do you all think about this and what advice would you give to me to pass along to her? Thanks in advance...

I think she should stick to her full time job and get better at it.

Why the hell do they "need" a female officer. How about needing the best qualified person for the job. Does the fact that she is female somehow make her specially qualified for this job.

Well let's see...ummmmm...how about the fact that there are females that do get arrested...duh! So how do you expect to search that female if there are things she may have on her person? I know they have to call other departments to help in this situation, but you can't be guaranteed that they will have or even have a female on. I recently assisted the town department that I work near to conduct a search. I know sometimes it sucks there is no one, but I can tell you that I would be ready at a moments notice to conduct a search if my local department ever needed me! The department I work for part time has NO female officers and they then ask the dispatchers to search the females....ummmm...NO!!! First of all this is not part of their job description and second they do not know the proper techniques to search a person. It then in my eyes would become an issue if said scumbag had something and the dispatcher was somehow injured. And how the f*** do you know that she isn't the "best qualified person" for the job?!?!? The department I work for has a dinosaur that believes women don't belong in law enforcement. Wake up people it's 2007 and well like it or not...women are doing the job and we are here to stay! Too f****** bad if some of you don't like it! I can tell you right now that I am better qualified then more than half of the guys in the department that I work for part time and I have not been hired as an officer even though I have applied on more than one occassion. I have been to an academy that I KNOW these guys wouldn't even make it through the first day!!! Does it piss me off...yes it sure as s*** does!!! That is why I continue to take classes (even at my own expense),take and learn as much as I can from the officers that are more experienced/sergeants,etc., and make myself more marketable! I know plenty of officers that don't bother taking the opportunities that are available and don't care about bettering themselves because they are too cocky and think they know it all! I work with some of these types of officers in both of my jobs. So firefighter...next time you think you know something...think before you speak!!! And to everyone else here sorry if you disagree!

How about you nozzle nose keeping out of police business, there are more than enough problems in the Fire Departments to keep you busy.

I never said that she is not the best qualified person - but the qualifiactions should be based on her resume, training, education, work history etc.. not on gender, race, ethnic background, minority group etc...

Being a woman, latino, black, etc.. should not even factor into the hiring process

I never said that it should be based on being a women, or race, etc...I agree with you on the fact the said person should be the best qualified, but when there is no female officers and the ones that do apply are not getting hired because of idiots who don't like women on the job well then I begin to have a problem with that. Why should someone (that is male or female, black or white or green) get passed over? They shouldn't, but there needs to be some kind of equality shall we say when all the department seems to be hiring are males even though females have applied with just as good or better resumes, training, and experience...

You are right, just like a woman (or any other group - fill-in the blank) should not get preference because of their gender, race etc.. they should also not be denied employement based on that either.

If you can show a pattern of discrimination why not file a law suit?
