MOSCOW — Sixty years after the AK-47 went into production, Mikhail Kalashnikov says he does not stay awake at night worrying about the bloodshed wrought by the world's most popular assault rifle.

"I sleep well. It's the politicians who are to blame for failing to come to an agreement and resorting to violence," Kalashnikov said Friday at a ceremony marking the birth of the rifle, whose initials stand for "Avtomat Kalashnikov."

well no shit! its always the operator. A firearm has no concience but you wouldnt know that watching the news.

More commonly known as the AK-47, or Kalashnikov. It's the world's most popular assault rifle. A weapon all fighters love. An elegantly simple 9 pound amalgamation of forged steel and plywood. It doesn't break, jam, or overheat. It'll shoot whether it's covered in mud or filled with sand. It's so easy, even a child can use it; and they do. The Soviets put the gun on a coin. Mozambique put it on their flag. Since the end of the Cold War, the Kalashnikov has become the Russian people's greatest export. After that comes vodka, caviar, and suicidal novelists. One thing is for sure, no one was lining up to buy their cars.
I love my AK.

Had it out the other day and happily sent rounds downrange until the handgrip was too hot to hold. Finshed off the 7.62x39 I brought with a Norinco SKS and then about a dozen or so rounds of 7.62x54R through a MN 91/30 to loosen up my shoulder.

Back home to clean them up on the back deck, cooling off with a few Sam Adams summer brews, yeah, that's the way to spend an afternoon! Covet this, baby!

Great gun, and a great round. When I first got to Baghdad, we were issued MP5s. Crummy 9MM round would barely get thru a car door. Our log guy got us M16s, but only 2 mags. Bought an AKM on the economy, and no shortage of mags or ammo. All 20 of us ended up with them, and loved them. If I go back, it will be my first purchase.

MP5's...wtf where they thinking? or maybe they were not.

That's like when Dyncorp and other contractors send you into the world with 9mm psitols and a smile! YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm getting better at identifying the guns, but isnt the MP5 a compact submachine gun, that carrys 9mm rounds, commonly used by SEALs for close quarter stealth missions? If thats the case, I hope you can ALL do head shots.

Posted by: SOT

All US defense contractors are issued gold plated MP5's in Iraq.

But seriously they generally look like this and come in 9mm, 40 S&W, 10mm, and the rare .357 SIG

I like the gold photo. Did you guys kick the shi@ out of C3-PO from star wars for that? Nice!! But seriously, I actually fear the AK's. Ive labeled it a terrorist weapon or a thugs weapon. Very rarely, do I hear of our military or law enforcement having those. So as you can see, I have a hard time trusting the thing. To kill or not to killl....

They melted C3PO down for these...

Do explain...I mean, do you think AK's will sneak into your house at night and abduct you? Are they hiding behind trees, waiting to pounce? Is it the firearm itself you fear or the perception that you have of it based on what the media has been feeding you? A terrorists/thugs weapon is fear, a firearm is just a tool. The terrorist/thug's weapon of fear is armed and made more powerful by the ignorance and placidity of his victims.

From one of the classics, "True Lies":
Quote:
"They call him the Sand Spider."

"Why?"

"Probably because it sounds scary."
Does this firearm scare you?

How about this one?

Can you tell me the biggest difference between the two? (SOT, stay out of this!)

Not so much the weapon, as the person holding it. As I said, mostly terrorist and thugs would carry such a weapon. Should the military adopt the weapon as standard issue for example, then I might kinda like it a little.

If a weapon could be made out of toothpaste and a paper clip (just an example) wouldnt you cringe at the thought of toothpaste and a paper clip? So when I hear AK 47, I think "great what happened now". Same thing with the pit bull in the other topic. Its normal for people to feel a certain way, when they are taught a certain way. How do you repair this? Bring it in our lives daily> Lets hear the militar for example, using this weapon, instead of our enemy killing innocence with it. Thats all I mean by 'it scares me'

I wouldn't cringe at the thought of toothpaste and a paper clip, as they are inanimate objects that are incapable of doing anything by themselves but occupy space and decompose.

My cat is afraid of the vacuum cleaner, but it will never get sucked into it. I don't blame the cat for his fear however, because the vacuum cleaner is big and makes a loud noise. The poor animal just doesn't know any better.

How do you repair the way people are brought to believe something? That's easy - education. Do not rely on what you have been told through potentially biased sources such as the media and elected officials. Often times their goal is not to give a clear picture of fact, but to further their own goals such as selling newspapers or getting re-elected. Being straightforward will take a back seat to those motivations. YOU are ultimately responsible for understanding the world around you. You have a computer - go online and do some reading about the history of the AK-47. It is actually a very impressive piece of craftsmanship. Find someone who owns one and examine it. Go to the range and shoot one! Take the time to research and learn about the things that frighten you, for with knowledge comes understanding.

Just because the US Military does not use the AK doesn't make it evil. The Iraqi police use AK's and the US is training and equipping them: http://www.defendamerica.mil/article...120904ls1.html

An Iraqi police officer aims his AK-47 rifle and prepares to fire at the range at Camp Independence Dec. 1, 2004. Civil Affairs teams supporting the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment and the 1st Battalion, 9th Cavalry Regiment, of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, conducted weapons and police training for members of the Al Karkh patrol sector. U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Susan German More photos

The AK was designed to be inexpensive, capable of production on a massive scale, simple to operate as most of the soldiers using it were conscripts with very limited skills, and extremely reliable. Our own Military Channel did a show about the top 10 combat rifles and the AK was right up there at #1. If civilization was to collapse next month, you would probably be surprised to hear how many right here in the US of A would prefer to have an AK in their hands.

There are probably tens of thousands of AK's and variants in the United States right now. Nearly all are kept by honest, law-abiding gun owners who appreciate the form and functionality of the rifle, not terrorists or thugs.

I bought a PolyTech AK back in 1985. It has the threaded flash suppressor and folding baonet. I love the thing. It's accurate, ammo is cheap, it will fire under any conditions and maintenance is a breeze.

You know what Wolfman? For years now, I have told kids, teenagers or anyone else, if somebody is willing to teach you something for free....listen. Eduacation is exspensive, if its in the other hand. So if you can get in cheap or free, keep your mouth quiet and listen. You did that for me just now. Thanks

I never would of thought that about the AK. They way you JUST put it, has me thinking. Numbers DONT lie. If what you say is true, thats knowledge thats new to me. Thanks.
