By KRISTEN WALSH The Patriot Ledger KINGSTON - A new member of the Kingston Police Department will be sworn in a few months from now, but he won’t be able to raise his hand or repeat after anyone.
The 1-year-old German shepherd nicknamed ‘‘Officer Paws’’ arrived in Kingston last week after being brought over from the Czech Republic.
His new partner is police officer Michael La Natra, who started the initiative to add a K-9 unit to the Kingston police force.
Chief Joseph Rebello thinks it is a positive addition for the community.
‘‘A K-9 unit will give us the opportunity to respond quicker, do searches and be able to utilize the dog for whatever the eventual training is, whether drugs or bomb sniffing,’’ Rebello said.
The chief said the police department calls the county sheriff for K-9 assistance several times a year. With its own K-9 unit, the department will know the dog’s capabilities and be able to respond faster and more efficiently, he said.
With the approval of selectmen and Rebello, La Natra created a non-profit organization called the Kingston Tactical Police Officers K-9 Fund. About $21,000 has been raised.
The money has been used to outfit a police cruiser with a back-seat cage, climate control with an alert system to keep the dog safe, and, in case La Natra is ever in trouble, a door that can be opened by remote control.
