SouthCoast harbor and police officials are focusing their attention on waterfront activities after 17 boats were vandalized in Wareham this week.
On Tuesday morning, three local teens were arrested and charged with larceny, vandalism, and breaking and entering after the boats were vandalized that morning, police said.
Those arrested are Tucker Hogan, 18, of 152 Onset Ave.; Jesse Martin-Long, 17, of 294 Main St.; and a 15-year-old Onset juvenile, according to police.
"It's not always a big problem," Lt. Irving I. Wallace said. "We had a string of car break-ins a week or so ago and now we're having a problem in the boats. It's fortunate that an alert citizen called."
Police Officer James White was dispatched to the Point Independence area around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday to investigate reports of people yelling and lighting flares from a boat, the lieutenant said.
"At that time in the morning, it's hard to detect," Lt. Wallace said.
"We have the harbor patrol, but they're not normally out there at night."
He said that after Officers White and Herbert Noble shouted to the people on the boat, the suspects jumped into another boat and fled toward Onset Bay Marina.
Police said officers and the town's harbormaster located the suspects on another boat and arrested them, later learning that items worth a total of $15,000 to $20,000 had been taken from the 17 boats.
Authorities estimated the value of the recovered items at $5,000 to $10,000.
"GPS devices were damaged and stolen," Lt. Wallace said.
"I know it's easier to leave equipment on the boat and lock it up, but I suggest boat owners taking any expensive equipment they can out."
These types of crimes are not isolated to Wareham.
Kristin Decas of the New Bedford Harbor Development Commission said boat break-ins and thefts have become a problem in recent years.
But they have been significantly offset since the Port Security Unit started work in August 2006.
"We try to be as diligent as possible," said Sgt. Jill Simmons of the port unit. She reported a decrease from an average 28 incidents a month to one or two.
"I encourage those who own boats to keep them locked," she said.
"Boat-owning people tend to be very trusting. Not many of them would leave their cars unlocked, but many of them don't lock up their boats."
According to police, the three suspects in Wareham were charged with 17 counts of breaking and entering into a motorboat, 17 counts of larceny of more than $250 and 17 counts of vandalism.
With the New Bedford fireworks display delayed to Saturday, surrounding harbor and shipyard security officials will keep watch.
"That night all the gates will be locked and no one will be allowed beyond them," said Mark Guzah, security official at D.N. Kelley Shipyard in Fairhaven, a family-owned business within walking distance from fireworks viewing areas. "We'll have our alarm system ready to go and our watchmen patrolling."
