Two men were rushed to hospitals last night after bullets tore through them in Roxbury, police said.
Police said the 21- and 25-year-old victims were near the intersection of Seaver and Harold streets when at least one gunman opened fire about 9:30 p.m. Each man was hit once.
When paramedics arrived, the 21-year-old was on a traffic island near the intersection with a gunshot wound to the chest. The 25-year-old lay on the sidewalk with a bullet hole in his belly.
A woman who lives near the scene and saw the immediate aftermath said she saw a woman stooped near the victim on the sidewalk talking on a cell phone, presumably calling for help.
“She was saying ‘Don’t close your eyes, honey. Don’t close your eyes,’ ” said the woman, who declined to give her name.
The two victims were taken to Boston Medical Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where both were in stable condition last night, Deputy Superintendent Daniel Linskey said. He said there are no suspects and a motive is under investigation.
The witness said her family thought the gunshots were late Fourth of July fireworks when they heard four to five loud pops.
