Bulletproof Vest- Municipality Required to Purchase?

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Just wondering if anyone is aware of a law- Federal or M.G.L. that requires municipalities to provide body armor to sworn LEO's? I know the DOJ program combined with the state's reimbursement aim to give all LEO's access to vests, but wondering if there is a requirement somewhere. Thanks in advance.

There are not any M.G.L.'s that "require" the issuance of vests for leo's. I couldn't find any federal statutes. The operative word "require" = mandated.....mandated usually means that it has to be funded. Which probably won't happen. If it's mandated, would it not then have to be worn? What happens to the trooper/officer/agent/deputy that doesn't have the mandated vest on and takes a hit(s) ? Some "expert" will come out of the woodwork and testify for the agency how the person "would" have survived had the mandated vest been worn. Next step would be the denial of death or disability benefits.
Be careful what you wish for!

Good point about the "expert" testimony, thanks for your efforts Sgt.
