Stoughton man led Hull, Weymouth police on car chase By The Patriot Ledger staff
WEYMOUTH - A Stoughton man wanted on charges of assault and attempted kidnapping in Hull led police on a car chase and three-hour manhunt yesterday morning.
Weymouth Police Lt. Andrew Wladyka said Hull police eventually arrested Matthew Cullen, 24, of 116 Bassick Circle, in the woods near O’Sullivan Park in Weymouth.
According to the Hull police log, the State Police received a call just after 7 a.m. from a woman who said she was being held against her will in a Pontiac on Nantasket Avenue.
Officer Buddy Colligan saw the car speeding south on Nantasket Avenue and attempted to stop it, but the driver refused to pull over.
Weymouth police picked up the chase at the town line.
Wladyka said Cullen’s car hit two vehicles when he raced through a red light at the intersection of North and Bridge streets. He then got out of his car and fled.
Police dogs from both departments were brought in to search for Cullen.
Hull police charged Cullen with kidnapping, breaking and entering in the nighttime for a felony, assault and battery domestic abuse, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, marked lanes violation, resisting arrest and speeding.
Weymouth police are charging him with driving to endanger, leaving the scene of an accident with injury, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, running a red light and a traffic lane violation.
Cullen was taken to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, then held overnight at the Hull police station for arraignment today in Hingham District Court.
